Sci-Fi / Fantasy Lit January 25-28, 2015 Welcome and happy Kazoo Day! Please grab a handout from the Take One Tray. Here is today’s agenda: Comparison and contrast notes Comparison and contrast practice “Be Right Back” comparison and contrast WR.9-10.9: I can draw evidence from literary texts to support analysis and reflection.

Blade Runner Permission Slips If anyone has still not turned in a permission slip to watch Blade Runner, I need it ASAP. We will be watching Blade Runner next week. If you do not have your permission slip signed then you will have to complete an alternative assignment.

Robots Unit Summative Assessment: On Demand Synthesis Essay (100 test points) This is what you will be asked to do at end of unit: Taking into account the pieces we have read along with your own opinion, answer the essential question, “What does it mean to be human?” For your response, you need to cite at least 3 of the texts/films you have encountered over the course of this unit. You may use direct quotes, paraphrasing, or summarizing, but make sure to cite the author/director.

Robots with humanity When robots work with humanity, trying to be human in some way, shape or form, the stories of those robots discuss what is good about humanity.

Proof of previous statement Kid in “Kid Brother” David in A.I. Artificial Intelligence EPICAC in “EPICAC”

Compare and Contrast Often times to find the major point of a story, we need to compare and contrast to understand what is being highlighted in each story and what specific claim is the author trying to make. Remember… Compare- estimate, measure, or note the similarity between two things. Contrast- to differ greatly.

How to make a proper Compare/Contrast Read closely. Annotate/make notes as you read along. Look at specific elements, not just an overall topic. If you get this joke, much respect.

Compare and Contrast Practice Listen to each song closely and read the lyrics. The Flaming Lips: “Do You Realize?” Blue Oyster Cult: “Don’t Fear the Reaper” On your handout, take notes over the… topics and themes each song addresses. the literary (and musical) elements. and important quotations..

What topics and themes are in the songs The Flaming Lips: “Do You Realize?” Lyrics Topics and themes Do you realize?, that you have the most beautiful face Do you realize?, we're floating in space, Do you realize?, that happiness makes you cry Do you realize?, that everyone you know someday will die And instead of saying all of your goodbyes, let them know You realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last You realize the sun doesn't go down It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round Do you realize?, oh, oh, oh Do you realize?, that everyone you know Someday will die

What topics and themes are in the songs Blue Oyster Cult’s “(Don’t Fear the Reaper)” Themes and Topics All our times have come Here, but now they're gone Seasons don't fear the reaper Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain (We can be like they are) Come on baby (Don't fear the reaper) Baby take my hand (Don't fear the reaper) We'll be able to fly (Don't fear the reaper) Baby I'm your man La, la la, la la La, la la, la la Valentine is done Here but now they're gone Romeo and Juliet Are together in eternity (Romeo and Juliet) 40, 000 men and women every day (Like Romeo and Juliet) 40, 000 men and women every day (Redefine happiness) Another 40, 000 coming every day (We can be like they are)

Comparison and Contrast “Don’t Fear the Reaper” “Do You Realize?”

“Clean Up Your Room” Comparison and Contrast. As we watch “Be Right Back,” consider how this story compares and contrasts with previous stories we have read. Again, take notes over the… topics and themes each song addresses. the literary elements. and important quotations. I will be pausing it twice and fast-forwarding it a bit because I like my job. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Formative Assessment Think back over the last three stories we have encountered (“Kid Brother,” A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, and “EPICAC.” Choose one of these stories that shares a common theme within the topic of “humanity” with “Be Right Back.” State the theme. Then, compare and contrast how each story approaches that theme in the Venn Diagram below. You need at least two items in each section.
