Fiction Signposts recognizing author’s craft to enhance comprehension and generate inferences. Aha Moment or Tough Questions Word of the Wiser Contrasts and Contradictions Again and again Memory Moment A difference between what the reader expects from the character and how the character actually acts. Also contrasts between characters or situations. Why would the character act or feel this way? Clues: A character behaves or thinks in a way that surprises the reader or an element of setting is unexpected Events, images, or particular words that repeat Why does the author bring this up again and again? Clues: A word is repeated, sometimes used in an odd way An image reappears several times A recollection by a character that interrupts plot development Why is the memory important? What background information about the past does this memory reveal? Clues: FLASHBACK AM-A character’s realization that shifts his actions or understanding of himself, others, or the world T?s-Questions a character raises that reveal his inner struggles How might this change the plot or character? Clues: “Suddenly I understood…” “In an instant I knew…” “What could I do…” Never had I been so confused about…” The advice or insight a wiser character (usually older) offers about life to the main character What is the theme (message/lesson) we can apply to real life? Clues: A wiser character shares his/her wisdom in an effort to help the main character with a problem or decision Define ?
