Everyday Music Part II Music as a Career

Instructions: For Quiz #1 (Wednesday, January 18 th, 2012) you will be responsible for writing three complete sentences for THREE of the following careers: Disc Jockey Singer/ Songwriter Vocal Performer Vocal Coach Live sound engineer Recording Engineer Music Publishing Promoter

Disc Jockey: DJ A DJ is a person that selects and plays music for an audience. Disc used to refer to records, then CDs. Now the term refers to music of any medium. Some types of music composed by DJs: Dance and Tech (short for technology) music is composed by stacking layers of music. These layers are often used in a LOOP format. A LOOP is a recorded melodic or rhythmic pattern that repeats continuously.

Disc Jockey: DJ (Continued) Loops can include: Percussion Parts Bass Lines Keyboard or synthesizer chords Lead guitar Vocal samples DJs can play SAMPLES which are short excerpts of sound from a previously existing source.

Singer/ Songwriter A singer/songwriter is a person that writes and performs their own songs. **The key to this career is that they write their own songs.** Some songwriters start with lyrics, some start with chord progressions, some start with a lick. LYRICS are the words to a song. CHORD PROGRESSION is the order in which chords are played in a piece of music. LICK is a short melodic or rhythmic pattern.

Vocal performers and entertainers present songs to the public in concerts, films, videos, musicals, and recordings. A singers vocal style and image help sell the song.

Vocal Coach A vocal coach is a music teacher who instructs singers on how to improve their singing technique, take care of and develop their voice, and prepare for the performance of a song or other work. Vocal coaches may give private music lessons to singers, or they may coach singers who are rehearsing on stage, or who are singing during a recording session.

Vocal Coach A coach usually has an area of expertise, such as expression, diction, or language. A vocal coach may suggest facial expressions and body gestures that may help convey the meaning of the song.

Live Sound Engineer An audio engineer, is a specialist in a skilled trade that deals with the use of machinery and equipment for the recording, mixing and reproduction of sounds. A LIVE sound engineer is the person that makes the music at a concert sound as balanced and as close to the audiences expectations as possible.

Live Sound Engineer A good sound engineer is experienced in the use of different types of sound equipment, has knowledge of acoustics, and knows how to run sound equipment to create the best live sound possible. Sound engineers can be found in other venues as well, including theater productions, churches, and political rallies just to name a few. What does a Live Sound Engineer do??

Recording Engineer A RECORDING ENGINEER is an expert at recording each instrument and voice. He or she is an expert in adjusting a weak or out of balance performance and creating a clear and accurate recording. When you hear a recording of your favorite artist, the sound has been carefully balanced and perfected in the studio. The easiest place to record a song is in a professional recording studio. What does a recording engineer do?

Music Publishing In the music industry, a music publisher (or publishing company) is responsible for ensuring the songwriters and composers receive payment when their compositions are used commercially. After a song is created, it may be prepared for publishing. To get a song ready for print, many different people are used.

Music Publishing The transcriptionist, arranger, copyist, and orchestrator are people that may work with the music to prepare it to be performed by others. In music, transcription can mean notating a piece or a sound which was previously un-notated. The arranger is a person who arranges a piece of music for a singer, a group of performers or other music ensembles. Copyists, are people who are employed by the music industry to produce neat copies from a composer or arranger's manuscript. An orchestrator is a musician who adapts a composition for particular voices or instruments or for another style of performance

Promoter An entertainment promoter in music is a person or company in the business of marketing and promoting live events such as concerts/gigs, festivals, etc. Promoters bring crowds through a variety of methods. Performing artists spend most of their time performing, practicing, traveling, and writing new songs. They rely on management professionals such as promoters to help them with the business side of their careers.
