Agenda – AIG LESSON 1: Learning Activity Summarizer A – Central Idea vs. Theme The teacher will present a Central Idea versus Theme Prezi. Students will select any three works of fiction or nonfiction, and detail the Central Ideas/Themes for each. Students will create a Brief Formative Assessment (Distinguish between Central Idea and Theme Statements) B – Evidence from the text and Central Idea/Theme Begin annotating Federalist Paper #10. Turn and talk about the evidence you have discovered so far. C – Finish Reading Federalist Paper #10 Finish reading and annotating Federalist Paper #10 1s tell 2s, 2s tell 1s Summarizing Strategy With a partner, write a short story with two or more characters, that has the same theme as Federalist Paper #10. There is no minimum word count in this story, but there should be clear evidence of dialogue, character growth (dynamic characters), setting and inferences/motivation of characters. Culminating Assignment Create a fishbone graphic organizer to track evidence from the text. Based on the evidence on your graphic organizer, what is the theme of “Federalist Paper #10?” Write at least one paragraph citing evidence from the story that supports your theme. (Use the RACER model).

Agenda – AIG LESSON 2: Learning Activity Summarizer A – Plot Structure and Historical Thinking Read the four Cherokee Legends, identifying the elements of plot (verbally), the elements of plot structure (written) [theme, setting, characters, conflict], and answering the five historical thinking questions for each (verbal). 1s tell 2s, then 2s tell 1s every 15 minutes for the verbal portions Quick write on mini-dry erase boards for elements of plot structure in each story. B – The Last Confession of Thomas Hawkins Diagram the plot structure of each of the four Cherokee Legends, as well as the Last Confession of Thomas Hawkins. Create your own formal assessment of the five stories. C – Inferences Write a paragraph or more argument, complete with all the elements of an argument, that supports at least two inferences about 1) the four Cherokee legends; and 2) The Last Confession of Thomas Hawkins 1s tell 2s, 2s tell 1s D – Nacirema Read the Nacirema article and analyze it using historical thinking. 1s tell 2s their answers to the historical thinking questions, citing evidence from the text. 2s agree or disagree and cite evidence from the text. Summarizing Strategy While you were away: Write a 1-page or less letter to an absent student summarizing the lesson. Culminating Assignment Continue the story of the Last Confession of Thomas Hawkins, keeping the same theme or adding an additional theme, adding two new conflicts (internal, external), and changing the perspective of the story from Thomas Hawkins to the people pursuing/punishing Thomas Hawkins or some other character of your devising (historical thinking).
