Heat Week 4 Check for preliminary understanding of what heat is

What is Heat? HEAT- The movement of thermal energy from a space of high concentration to a low concentration TEMPERATURE- The measurement of heat Ask what happens when hot water is poured in cold water Ask boiling point and freezing point; difference between Fahrenheit and Celcius

Transferring Heat CONDUCTION- Transferring heat through direct contact CONVECTION- Transferring heat through a fluid RADIATION- Transferring heat through electromagnetic waves Give examples of each (egg in hot water, heat rising in air, sunbeams on earth)

Establish that fluids are not limited to liquids (also gases)

Be more specific…? SPECIFIC HEAT- The amount of heat it takes to raise one gram of water by one degree Celsius ENTROPY- The tendency for energy to turn into heat Go over roughly (not specific); talk about how water is amazing because it can hold a lot of heat (why beach is cooler) Talk about burning wood; what is created and destroyed? (heat, light, etc)

Funky Heat gadgets THERMOMETER- A device used to measure heat INSULATOR- Material that does not allow heat to move through it easily. Talk about boiling/freezing point, body temperature. Examples of insulators for heat (thermos, jacket) and cold (cooler, icebox)
