Exercise 8 Descending

Exercise 8 Descending Aim To enter and maintain a steady glide then at a predetermined altitude return to level flight or climb, also to enter and maintain a steady cruise descent.

In a glide, descent and will vary with airspeed Forces in a glide Lift Lift Drag Drag Thrust Weight Weight Component of weight Acting as thrust In a glide, descent and will vary with airspeed

Descent Rates and Angles Cruise descent reduce engine rpm Best glide angle 1 min at 50mph 600ft per min Minimum sink 1 min at 45 500ft per min Rapid descent 1 min at 70 mph 900ft per min Adding power in a descent and maintaining airspeed will reduce the angle and rate of descent

To Enter A Descent A.P.T Attitude. Power. Trim. A.- Attitude- lower nose to descent attitude and hold P. Power – reduce as required. T.- Trim- Adjust to achieve desired airspeed and descent rate and trim

To Level of from descent or enter climb from descent P&A. T To Level of from descent or enter climb from descent P&A.T. Power & Attitude. Trim Important to do both together P.A.T To level out or enter a climb from a descent P&A-Power and attitude –increase power and raise nose together T- Trim-adjust attitude to achieve

Airmanship Lookout – below behind and blind spots, for other traffic and cloud Airspace – Check chart Altimeter- Correct setting for airspace Engine – Warm during descent with power bursts every 300ft during glide
