Teacher strategies Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

The facts about ADHD Most common classroom behavioral disorder Can cause major disruptions in the classroom if the proper accommodations are not in place Teachers at Franklin Towne carefully plan and accommodate for students who have ADHD, allowing all students to be successful on a daily basis

Strategy 1 From day one, setting clear rules with logical consequences and rewards Home Connection: Be sure to address daily behavior at home Communication is key! Make any success a “big deal” Correlate similar discipline plan and rules at home

Strategy 2 Develop and use a behavior plan Examples: Sticker charts Daily Reports Color systems Reward and incentives Home Connection: Support the behavior plan Address goals at home Make suggestions to teachers

Strategy 3 Breaking long work into shorter chunks Scheduling times for breaks Giving students extra time on tests Allowing our students to engage in kinesthetic activities while learning Home Connections: Give your child breaks during homework time Allow children to engage in exercising activities before or after school

Strategy 4 Developing a secret language with the child The Rubber band method Home Connection: Remember to communicate with your child, address their needs and be conscious that ADHD is a medical condition. We must help children with ADHD develop strategies to use in their daily life, to eliminate behavioral issues.

Questions to ask your child’s teacher What behavioral needs does my child have within the classroom? What ways can I help my child at home? How can I support my child with his/her behavior plan?
