Who is responsible for rising obesity rates? Argumentative Who is responsible for rising obesity rates?

Mini Debate = Pro or Con? The government or other agencies are responsible for turning around rising obesity rates. Select a debate slip from the box. If you choose Pro, then jot down reasons you would be Pro. If you choose Con, then jot down reasons you would be Con. Let’s debate!

Two Informational Texts Text 1 Labels and Illusions (page 83-86 in Close Reader) Text 2 Excerpt from: Kids’ ads under fire: industry gets proactive as activists, regulators scrutinize marketing, menus

Learning Goals Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in 2 texts, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient to support the claims. Watch the video. Who makes the best flyer? Why? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmQ3ZSf3xSU Write an argumentative essay that makes and supports a claim based on the 2 sources analyzed.

Target Goal (01.10) Today we will learn how to determine the author’s claim and analyze how the author supports her claim. Agenda: 1) Bell Work 2) Argumentative Sort & Brainstorm 3) Read and text-mark article, Labels and Illusions. 4) Take notes on T-Chart 5) Answer and outline answers to text dependent questions 1 – 3. 6) Exit Slip

You decide… Should the government or other organizations be responsible for turning around the rise in obesity rates or should individuals be responsible? Read “Labels and Illusions” Text-mark (Underline the author’s claim & circle the evidence to support her claim.)

Let’s try paragraph #1 together! Turn and talk to your partner about the third bullet on page 85, #5. Be ready to share what you heard your partner say. Possible unfamiliar words are… Skeptical = not easily convinced; having doubts or reservations Whimsical = playfully quaint or fanciful, especially appealing and amusing way Does the author think government and organizations should be responsible for turning obesity rates around? Or does the author think individuals should be responsible for turning obesity rates around?

TDQ = Text Dependent Question At your group… Choose 1 of the 3 TDQs. With your partner, decide how you can respond to the question and find some evidence to support your answer. Create an outline. Your outline must restate the question and bullet the evidence. See rubric. You must get approval for your outline before you write a paragraph response.

Example Outline The author uses test results to prove that people’s eyes can deceive them when it comes to portion sizes. “People who were served on larger plates thought that they had been served a small portion. People served on smaller plates thought that they had been served a large portion.” (___) “a series of experiments done to measure the effect of the Delboeuf illusion on peoples’ perception of the portion size” (___)

Explain how the optical illusion helps to educate people about portion size. Exit Slip http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/pictures/illusions/delboeufillusion.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgAu-LuSkkM
