International Radio Occultation Working Group (IROWG) 2nd Workshop March 28th – April 3rd, 2012 Estes Park, CO

IROWG Overview Part of Coordinated Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS) CGMS formed in 1972 by WMO and ESA Provides and international forum for technical exchange IROWG formed at CGMS-37 (2009) CGMS Subgroups International ATOVS WG International Precipitation WG International Satellite Winds WG International Radio Occultation WG

IROWG Charter International coordination of efforts is needed to maximise coverage, avoid gaps in the observation system, and ensure a sufficient data flow. Foster the development of standard software for operational and scientific use, maintain standard datasets for processing harmonisation and validation, promote best practices for the effective use of this data and organise ongoing re-processing of RO data for climate use.

2nd IROWG Workshop To be held jointly with UCAR GNSSRO Data Users Workshop March 28th – April 1st – Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, CO Expect approximately 100-150 attendees Agenda patterned after other CGMS Workshops Talks, posters, subgroup sessions Conference bridges weekend – time for offline discussions with collegues Subgroup recommendations elevated to CGMS

Sub-Groups Research to Operations / Mission Consolidation Payload Technology Innovative RO Techniques / Research Space Weather RO Data Processing Numerical Weather Prediction Climate

Sub-Group Work Should discuss relevant activities in their field Can formulate recommendations or actions Focus is on 12 – 36 months Recommendations: can be relevant to CGMS (and will be reported there) can be relevant to RO in general Actions: are within the sub-group / IROWG itself
