Solution: The largest sum that can come up is 12 and the only sums larger than 8 are 9, 10, 11, and 12 These outcomes are mutually exclusive, since only one of these sums can possibly occur on one throw of the dice

Example The probability of throwing more than 8 is the same as P(9 or 10 or 11 or 12) Since the events are mutually exclusive, P(9 or 10 or 11 or 12) = P(9) + P(10) + P(11) + P(12)
