Group work 1 Write 6 characteristics of an effective team and 6 benefits of working together. Draw a picture that shows good team work. Submitting project after dead line will not be entertained.

Everybody's Story This is a story about four people: Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.

Trust “You may be deceived if you trust too much, but you will live in torment if you don't trust enough.” -Frank Crane, American author Foundational principle Provides a sense of safety. Takes time to earn but just a matter of second to lose.

Four basic pillars of a team Effective Team Proper Communication Acknowledgement and Respect Trust Empathy Motivation Common understanding

Group work 2 Trust: How do you build and maintain trust within your group? Empathy: How do you show empathy to your members ? Acknowledgment and respect: What would you do to show your respect to your team mates ? Motivation: How do you motivate your staff to get the work done ? Communication: How could you make your communication effective ?

Team Since a single person can not perform well, everyone in the organization needs someone else’s help. S/he must rely on a team with whom s/he works with to provide quality service to their customers . So it is necessary to maintain team spirit within a team.

Without proper coordination among members, team can not perform well.

What is T E A M ?

Team is not only a subject to read, but also a need to feel and understand the spirit.

Team Team

Team A team is a group of diverse individuals working together for a common goal.  They are committed to obtain desired objectives in a certain period of time.

“Are We a Team?” checklist (Levin & Kent, 2001) We all show equal commitment to our objective. We all take part in deciding how work should be allocated. We acknowledge good contributions from team members. We remain united even when we disagree. We are able to give constructive suggestions to one another and to accept it ourselves. When one of us is under pressure, others offer to help him or her. We trust each other. We support each other to outsiders. We feel comfortable and relaxed with one another.

What’s needed to be a team ? Key elements: Strong leadership, Supportive members Common understanding Openness Commitment Cooperation Effective communication Respect, Trust and empathy Responsibility and accountability

Teamwork: ability to work together Team spirit: feeling of belongingness Team building: process to motivate and increase overall performance of a team

Essential Teamwork skills and role Skills that bring people together and make their team spirit high Recognizing and respecting individual values Good listener ( Listen first, speak second) Cooperative Caring for others emotions Delegating power where necessary

Cont. Ask help and be ready to offer Active participation Trustworthiness Committed / Hard working Innovative and problem solver Optimistic

Teamwork divides the tasks and doubles the success Synergy: Better outputs New perspective: opportunity to learn Division of Work: less stress, required less time Support for difficult situations. Building better relationship Effective decisions Having fun and enjoyment

Challenges of working in a team Burning desire to outshine(overtake) Clash of ideas - no willing to compromise “Free – riding” or “social loafing” may occur May not take responsibilities / could be passive Few people may dominate the group People may not bother to listen and understand others Different perceptions may lead to misunderstandings The blame game - Arguments and disagreements may arise May spoil the relationship- may consume extra time and resources

Stages in Team Building (American organizational psychologist Bruce Tuckman- 1965) Storming Norming Performing Adjourning Forming Roles are defined Rules, values, behaviour, method and procedures are established Facilitating Members are motivated to Participative Strong commitment Achievement oriented Delegating Revision, analysis and evaluation of achievements Feedbacks and acknowledgments Strategies Disassembled Evaluating conflict over the task and the way of operating, power, leadership and decision making Coaching initial orientation and interpersonal testing, exchange some personal information Directing

How do we foster team work in our organization ?

A boat does not go forward if each one is rowing their own way.

Able Leadership Visionary, commanding, protective Takes little more share of blame and less of credit A good listener/ motivator

Knowing each other in your team goal Common understanding Be genuinely interested in team mates, their likes and dislikes. strengths and weaknesses.

Defining tasks, roles and responsibilities

Communicating properly Its an art. Listen to your members Share information (do not hold them for personal benefit) Make sure people understand it. Don’t jump into the conclusion without listening the whole story. Know to communicate without hurting anyone's emotions (.....the fence)(harsh word)

Well preparation is half done. Planning properly Well preparation is half done. Plan your work, work to plan

Let them involve Encourage them to participate Acknowledge their views Let them feel they are also part of the team

Mutual trust and respect “It’s hard to earn trust, but even harder to get it back once you’ve lost it.” Respecting others is a way to gain trust from them. Respect their individual differences.

Have empathy for others Every one is capable and when they get proper support, they can perform even better. (broken bucket)

Encouraging each other “Encouraging other means helping people, looking for the best in them and trying to bring out their positive qualities. - John Maxwell

Focusing on result

Managing conflicts Conflicts may arise. Take necessary steps to find out the root cause and solve it.

Common faith Team players feel good, when .people at work remember their birthday and anniversaries. Appreciate and reward the idea and contribution of your team members as often as you can ! Celebrate their important days.

“Praise publicly and criticize privately.”

13. The greatest enemy in a team is “EGO” is “Ego” Never let it grow between relationship.
