Deuteronomy: An Overview Final three speeches by Moses before his death Written as a covenant with three parts History of God’s involvement with his people (Ch. 1-4) Review of the laws God had given to his people (Ch. 4-26) Promise of blessings if Israel obeys God’s laws, warning of curses if Israel disobeys God’s laws (Ch. 27-30) Transfer of leadership to Joshua (Ch. 31-34)

Today’s Lesson: God Chooses His People Who is this God who chooses a people for himself? Why did he choose this people? What do his chosen people get?

Who Is This God Who Chooses A People For Himself? The one true God (Deuteronomy 4:32-39) “Did any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and still live? Or has any god ever attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, and by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great deeds of terror, all of which the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord is God; there is no other beside him.” Who are the false gods in my generation?

Who Is This God Who Chooses? The sovereign God (Deuteronomy 7:17-19) “If you say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I. How can I dispossess them?’ you shall not be afraid of them but you shall remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt…So will the Lord your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid.” Does anything seem too hard for my God?

Mad Gab Mania! Sample: Canoes He Wad Ice He Plea See Chores Hoop Thigh Sing Gone Thick Ache Noggin Hock Ooze Their

Why Did He Choose This People? Not because of their goodness (Deuteronomy 9:4-6) “Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stubborn people.” But because of his love (Deuteronomy 7:6-8) “It was not because you were more in number than any other people…for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers” Why would God choose me?

What Do His Chosen People Get? The law (Deuteronomy 27:4-8) “And when you have crossed over the Jordan, you shall set up these stones…and you shall write on the stones all the words of this law very plainly” Descendants (Deuteronomy 10:22) “…the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven” Land (Deuteronomy 11:11) “The land that you are going over to possess…”

Reflection: Deuteronomy 6:4-9 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

The Greatest Gift Of All God’s own presence “For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him?” (Deuteronomy 4:8) “Do not fear or be in dread…for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6) Do I feel God is near to me?

SMALL TALK: Deuteronomy 33:27 “The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” What is the hardest situation you can imagine? Could you face it with God’s help?
