TEC assembly and commissioning at Lyon 21/04/2019 Nick Lumb

Overview What do we want to do? How can we do it? Discussions with industry Conclusions 21/04/2019 Nick Lumb

Technical Goals Assembly of one full endcap Test as fully as possible before shipping to CERN Mechanical properties/alignment Services (HV, LV, optical links, TEC cooling system etc.) Alarms and interlocks DAQ system Overall DAQ performance Sensor noise Sensor signal (cosmics) Scale: “tower” level (limited by cost and material constraints) Safe manipulation of TEC: on-site and during transport 21/04/2019 Nick Lumb

Strategy (1) Operation at ambient temperature Petal insertion Fast testing of individual sectors and whole disks Easy access for personnel at any point during testing Cooling loop with coolant at elevated temperature (e.g. 10°C) Requires controlled humidity (30% RH at 22°C->dew point 2°C) “Default” mode of operation Operation at CMS temperature (-10°C) To study, under realistic conditions, at the earliest opportunity Mechanical deformations Performance of cooling system and humidity control Slow control (temp./humidity measurement, alarms, interlocks) Impact on sensor performance 21/04/2019 Nick Lumb

Strategy (2) Operation at -10°C (cont.) TEC coolant at -20°C Requires ambient cooling to at least -10°C Dew point must remain below coolant temperature Possibility of very dry atmosphere desirable Harsh environment for personnel Tests in this mode less frequent, longer-term 21/04/2019 Nick Lumb

Strategy (3) TEC handling and orientation “Horizontal” is easier for testing and necessary for cosmics tests. “Vertical” is more realistic for integration and deformation studies, and probably better for transport. Need support structure capable of rotating TEC about horizontal axis. Could be fixed to TEC until just prior to insertion into tracker Requires collaboration with Aachen (discussions soon) 21/04/2019 Nick Lumb

Working specification (1) Existing structure: Domed building with glass fiber walls, diameter ~16m Crane (max. load 1500kg) Services: power (30+11kW – will need more), water, alarm system, electrical screening (Faraday cage), storm protection Build interior structure: 12m x 8m x 4m (height) Barracks room: 4m x 8m x 3m Control room: PCs, electronics racks Standard air conditioning (22°C±2°C) Prefabricated structure 21/04/2019 Nick Lumb

Proposed installation 21/04/2019 Nick Lumb

Working specification (2) Cold room: 8m x 8m x 4m Endcap assembly and test area Standard air conditioning with fresh air intake during ambient temperature (22°C±2°C) operations Cold-room rated walls, floor and ceiling Cooling and de-humidification by recycling of air and condensation removal by thermal cycling (no exchange of air with outside during cold operations) Option: de-humidification using silica gel rotors (water removed from outside air then cooled) Class 10000 laminar flux installation (4m x 4m) at centre of zone (to prevent particle settlement on TEC and sectors) Large door for eventual removal of TEC Isolated from outside light sources 21/04/2019 Nick Lumb

Cold room set-up 21/04/2019 Nick Lumb

Commercial offers (1) Technical proposals and pricing from 3 independent Lyon-based companies Together they address all of the variants in our working specification: Dehydration by cooling with condensation removal (closed air circuit) Water removal using silica gel rotors Different approaches to coupling of air circulation systems (air conditioning, laminar flux, cold and dry air) Total power consumption ~40kW + 15kW zone 1 21/04/2019 Nick Lumb

Conclusions Have investigated in some detail the possible scenarios for TEC assembly and test facility at Lyon. Have made contact with industry and know what is feasible within reasonable budget. Detailed Call for Tender has been prepared and submitted for publication. Start of installation planned for first quarter 2003. 21/04/2019 Nick Lumb

Test sequence Petal delivery Fast tests before insertion into TEC Insertion into TEC (delivered with fully equipped and tested services end 2003) Quick tests at room temperature Equip full FEC ring and read out at -10°C Equip full “tower” and read out at -10°C 21/04/2019 Nick Lumb
