Chemical Changes September 26, 2017

Objective SWBAT: understand and apply the law of conservation of mass.

Law of Conservation of mass Video

Law of Conservation of Mass The law of conservation of mass says that mass in a closed system cannot be created or destroyed. However, mass can change forms. This means that in a chemical reaction, there has to be the same number of atoms before and after the reaction.

Chemical Reactions In a chemical reaction, the atoms and molecules that interact with each other are called reactants. The atoms and molecules produced by the reaction are called products. The law of conservation of matter tells us that the mass of the reactants is always equal to the mass of the products.

Baking Soda and Vinegar If there are 22 grams of reactants, then there must be 22 grams of products. The mass of the reactants and products may have changed forms, but they are still there.

Baking Soda and Vinegar Answer the questions on your worksheet as we progress through the demonstration. Make sure to ask questions if there is anything that confuses you.

Practice using law of conservation of matter Using your notes, answer the questions about chemical reactions and the law of conservation of mass.

Homework Finish the worksheet if you did not finish in class. Summarize today’s lesson in 5 words. Exit Ticket
