Principles of Emergency Communications Accuracy Conciseness Speed Standard Procedures Get the Message Through! A. ACCURACY: It is absolutely vital that emergency communications be relayed with the utmost accuracy. Omissions or incorrect information can cause inconvenience at best, and can be tragic at worst. Radio operators must always transmit and copy messages as given;   B. CONCISENESS: During a SAR situation there is no time for unnecessary or redundant information. Radio operators must attempt to be as concise as possible, consistent with accuracy; and SPEED: Speed and efficiency are important operating characteristics for emergency communications. Important messages, even if concise and accurately relayed, are of no use if delivered too late. Standard procedures: Numerous exercises and real-life events have confirmed that standardized procedures are vital. This includes terminology, frequencies, equipment compatibility and communications formats. For Amateurs, this means that we must have standardized procedures, compatible with the agencies we support, that we exercise on a regular basis. The time to learn this stuff is BEFORE an emergency! 4
