Apprenticeship: Safety, Health & Environment Technician Context The SHE technician apprenticeship was developed by a Trailblazer Group and approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships (IFA) a crown, non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Education. A Trailblazer group is a group of employers, across multiple sectors, who work collaboratively to create an apprenticeship standard they each intend to roll out once approved. The development took around 18 months to complete, during which time, IOSH were consulted and engaged, all of this ensured the standard be appropriate, robust, and also that it would cover the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours required for a Technical Membership. More information, and the standard itself can be found at www.instituteforapprenticeships.org Occupational Profile The SHE Technician will be able to work in organisations of varying size and industry; based in one location or involving travel across a range of contracts. The role will be partly office based and partly at the work front providing advice to others on how to work without harming themselves or others. The Technician will work with the management and delivery team in the organisation to advise on the statutory health, safety and environmental requirements as they affect the company’s operations. They will assist the management team in ensuring that the legal and company SHE requirements are implemented. On a daily basis the SHE Technician will assist to develop, review and check on the implementation of safe systems of work, deliver training (e.g. toolbox talks & inductions), investigate incidents, analyse data and present findings to the management team. The SHE Technician will engage with all aspects of the organisation to support the embedment of a culture that ensures everyone is able to return to their family and friends unharmed every day whilst also protecting and enhancing the global land, air and water resources for future generations. This will be achieved by inspiring and influencing others to see the benefit of working responsibly, understanding the legal framework and showing how safety, health and environmental management can enhance operational activities. Apprenticeship: Safety, Health & Environment Technician FAQ’s Is it live? Yes, it was signed off on 29th March by the IFA. It will depend on provision of training materials and employers uptake as to how quickly the first apprentices start to come through. How long is the Apprenticeship? The apprenticeship duration is 24 months, this is inclusive of Training and End-Point Assessment (EPA) What level is it? QCF Level 3 / EQF Level 4 / Comparable to A level grades A-E Are there any entry requirements? The apprentice must have achieved or be working towards 5 GCSE’s A*- C including English and Maths as well as knowledge to level 1 equivalent for commonly used office computer applications What is end-point assessment? End-point assessment (EPA) is separate to any qualifications or training assessment that takes place during the training portion of the apprenticeship. EPA takes place at the end of the apprenticeship and is delivered by an independent third party (or a party that has had no part in the delivery of the apprenticeship) For safer and healthier working environments iosh.co.uk/training

Apprenticeship: Safety, Health & Environment Technician FAQ’s What assessment method is involved in the SHE Technician Apprenticeship? For this apprenticeship there are three types of end-point assessment. Knowledge Test (Multiple Choice & Open Answer Questions), Professional Discussion and Assessment of Work Project. The assessment documentation can also be found at www.instituteforapprenticeships.org Is there any funding available? For levy paying employers in England, or for those who’s apprentice would spend at least 50% of their working hours in England, there is £5k available per apprentice for training and end-point assessment. Non-levy paying employers will share the cost of training and assessing their apprentices with government - this is called ‘co-investment’. You will pay 10% towards to the cost of apprenticeship training and government will pay the rest (90%) Employers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will need to follow advice provided by their local governments as funding arrangements there differ for Apprenticeships and other skills training. How can I become a trainer of apprentices? In order to become a trainer of apprentices, you are required to be on the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers (RoATP). Information on how to apply can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/register-of-apprenticeship-training-providers For safer and healthier working environments iosh.co.uk/training

Apprenticeship: Safety, Health & Environment Technician FAQ’s If I use the IOSH pathway to train the apprentice, do I need to register them? Yes, as per IOSH terms and conditions all providers using IOSH materials to support the apprentice must: Hold a current license to deliver the product Ensure that all delegates have a workbook Ensure all delegates take the assessment and are presented with an IOSH certificate In the case of Safety and Health for Business all the above must be followed plus registration of the delegate IOSH’s T&C’s provide more information on this element, but in essence, this is about providing a fair and consistent approach for all Apprentices. Providing all necessary recognition, leading to increased employability. Failure to follow IOSH’s Terms and Conditions could lead to your license being revoked Who are the end-point assessors? You can find a list of approved End-Point Assessors here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/register-of-end-point-assessment-organisations#register-of-end-point-assessment-organisations For safer and healthier working environments iosh.co.uk/training
