Chapter 8 Photosynthesis
Objectives 1. State the equation of photosynthesis. (Knowledge) 2. Explain the process of photosynthesis. (Comprehension) 3. Describe what occurs during the light dependent and light independent reactions. (Knowledge) 4. Summarize the entire process of photosynthesis. (Evaluation)
PHOTOSYNTHESIS - The production of organic materials, especially glucose from carbon dioxide, water, and light energy.
CHLOROPLASTS Small membrane bound organelles that contain chlorophyll and stroma. Are found in the mesophyll cells inside the leaf.
CHLOROPHYLL - Light trapping green pigments found in photosynthetic plants.
GRANA Stack of round flat pillow shaped things called thylakoids. There can be from 2 to around 100 thylakoids in one granum.
THYLAKOID - Photosynthesis takes place on the outer layer of the thylakoid.
6H2O+ 12CO2+ Light 6O2+ Glucose + O2
LIGHT DEPENDENT REACTIONS Occur in the thylakoid membrane. Inputs= Water and Light Outputs= ATP, NADPH, and O2
LIGHT INDEPENDENT REACTIONS Occurs in the stroma of the chloroplast. Inputs= NADPH, ATP, and CO2 Outputs= NADP+, ADP, and a sugar
FACTORS THAT AFFECT PHOTOSYNTHESIS Availability of water Temperature Intensity of light
