3 Steps to Better Meals on a Limited Budget Plan for food buying Shop smart in the grocery store Store and use food wisely in the home

Step 1: Plan Determine weekly budget Use pre-planned menus Make a grocery list Consider food and nutrient needs and preferences of family members

Step 2: Shop Smart Use unit pricing and food labels Buy “in-season” Stick to your list Don’t shop when you are hungry Shop by yourself when possible

Step 3: Store and Use Wisely Take groceries home as soon as possible, and place in refrigerator/freezer Divide meats into meal-size portions and wrap to protect from freezer burn Store non-refrigerated items in covered containers to prevent insect infestation

Step 3: Store and Use Wisely Prepare only what your family will eat in one or two meals Use preparation and cooking techniques that prevent loss of nutrients Plan for the use of leftover food Store leftovers properly to prevent waste and spoilage

Summary Determine $$ for the week Plan low-cost menus Make a shopping list Compare prices (unit prices) Use food labels Don’t shop when you are hungry Stick to your list Avoid wastage
