The Difference Between Trials and Temptations What is the difference? (James 1:1-18) Same term in the Greek. (vv. 2, 12, 13) Strong: An experiment. Trial (4), Temptation (12) The word for trial/temptation is the word we “experience” and “experiment”. The context of James indicates a difference: A trial often befalls us through no fault of our own. (2) A temptation appeals to our weaknesses and lust for the purpose of leading us to sin. (13) God will test us (Genesis 22:1) for the purpose of making us stronger and developing a mature faith. (James 1:2-4) Satan will tempt for the purpose of leading us to sin.
