RISK ASSESS YOUR CHRISTMAS FUNCTION A guide to celebrating your year without breaching obligations to the health and safety of staff

Before the party Here are some considerations to ensure the protection of your staff at a Christmas event: Send a friendly staff email where you outline what is acceptable and unacceptable Refer to relevant policies Emphasise restraint with alcohol

At the party Ensure alcohol is served responsibly Ensure plenty of food and non-alcoholic drinks are available to everyone Hold the party away from the office if possible

Develop policies Make sure you have policies in place covering: Harassment (including sexual harassment) Workplace health and safety Responsible provision of alcohol

Minimise your risks Get your employees home after the event Conduct a risk assessment beforehand Identify risks Put risk-minimising measures in place

Keep everyone informed Are your managers aware of your policies? Can they step in if necessary? Does your insurance cover the event?

The party and ‘after the party’ Have a clear start and finish time Make it clear: After the party, you’re on your own

If something happens… You may be liable for inappropriate statements/conduct You may be liable for harassment incidents Make sure appropriate action is taken Follow your policies and procedures

No one should be caught out!

Make it a night to remember – fondly!
