THE OPTIONS PROCESS Appropriate, informed choices Ask audience to look at the S4 Options form.

Compulsory Health & Well-Being Subjects – for ALL S4-S6 pupils Physical Education (2 periods per week) PSE/Active Citizenship(1 period per week) RME (1 period per week) 12

S4 Course Choices English or ESOL and Maths are mandatory. 4 periods a week in English/ESOL and Maths. 5 periods a week per subject in Columns B to E. S4 to S6 can all be in the same class in Columns B to E – focus is on pupils being at the right level/stage as opposed to the same year group. 13

Options could include: S4 Master Class Options The purpose of master classes is to give pupils opportunities to develop skills in different contexts – 1 period per week. Options could include: Photography Spoken word / poetry skills Rugby Junior sports leadership Citizenship Highlight the benefits of master classes – 1 period per week, option will change in November. Pupils will then move on to their next choice.

No subject is mandatory. 5 periods a week Columns A to E. S5/6 Course Choices 6 Columns to choose from. No subject is mandatory. 5 periods a week Columns A to E. Directed Study (S6 only) will be timetabled within the school. One column only for pupils sitting 4 or more Highers in S6. Personal Development Column (4 periods per week). Ask the audience to look at S5/S6 Forms Highlight column A and B personal development options and explain this. Highlight changes to the personal development column in terms of periods allocated to it. Highlight that directed study period is for our academic pupils. 15

Personal Development Options All Personal Development options are 4 periods per week and are all accredited. Possible options for next session include: Art Portfolio (Art & Design Department) NPA Drawing and Painting – level 5 (Art & Design) NPA Photography – level 5 (Art & Design) NPA Enterprise (Business Education) SQA Award Skills for Life – Science focus (Science) NPA Musical Theatre – level 6 (Performing Arts) NPA Musical Performance – level 6 (Performing Arts) PE Performance – level 6 units (PE) CSLA (PE) SQA Volunteering Award – level 5 (Pupil Support) Duke of Edinburgh Award (Bronze / Silver) 16

Senior Phase is more than Subject Choices Leadership opportunities Youth Parliament Pupil Participation Whole school committees Opportunities to help prepare for a Positive Destination REACH Programme Top-Up Programme Career Ready Programme Career insight visits / projects I will stop at this point and ask Kirsteen and then Gail? Points to Note Advanced Higher subjects can be chosen in any column. However, pupils must make a second choice under that column. Partnership links with other local schools, Glasgow Clyde College & Caledonian University. All courses are not guaranteed to run (any level), pending pupil uptake and staff availability. 18

Points to Note Some subjects only progress up to National 5 or Level 5. This could impact on future choices in the following year. These subjects are: Employability Hospitality Travel & Tourism Woodwork 19
