Cells All living things are made of cells. Cells are the building blocks of life.

Cells A Cell is the smallest unit that is capable of performing life functions. It is born, lives and then dies like all living things.

Cell Organization Cells are the smallest unit. Tissue: is cells working together. Organ: is tissues working together. Your heart is an example of an organ. Organ system: group of organs working together, like the cardiovascular system. You: group of organ systems!

Where are the cells? Cells are invisible to the naked eye. They are microscopic! You need a microscope to see them.

Where are the cells?

Plant Cells

Onion Cells

Human Cheek Cells

1st group of cells Prokaryotic (pro – care - ee – AH – tik) Cells have a membrane There is no nucleus Bacteria are a type of prokaryotic cells It’s like a house without any rooms! Cell Membrane

2nd Group of Cells Eukaryotic (you – care – ee- AH – tik) Has a membrane Has a nucleus inside It’s like a house with many rooms and each room serves a function Living organisms except bacteria have eukaryotic cells

Discuss at your table: What are the two groups of cells Discuss at your table: What are the two groups of cells? And what are the major differences?

It’s too hard to remember! Eukaryotic (you – care – ee- AH – tik) – remember this starts with “you.” Your cells have nucleus so all Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus!

Types of Cells In total, our bodies have over a trillion cells! We have lots of different types (not groups) of cells. Each cell works together with other cells to do its job.

Take out a piece of paper, a pen and pack up everything else. Exit Slip 54 Take out a piece of paper, a pen and pack up everything else. When you are done with ES54, stand silently behind your chair and wait to be dismissed.

Yes, write down the question and then the answer! What are cells? Do rocks have cells? Is bacteria living or not? What differentiates Prokaryotic from Eukaryotic cells? Name two types of cells you have in your body? Approximately how many cells does a human being have in his/her body? Describe how cells are organized?
