The Great Gatsby Week 1: 2/11-2/15

Bell Work 2/11 What is the American Dream? Define in your own words.

Agenda 2/11 Continue F. Scott Fitzgerald documentary Begin reading chapter 1 I will be calling you up to complete a journal check.

Bell Work 2/12 What role does class play in Chapter 1? What themes are beginning to develop?

Agenda 2/12 Chapter 1 Quiz Go over quiz Chapter 1 Questions Begin reading chapter 2 I will be checking journals during class.

Bell Work 2/13 How does setting impact characters? Create a list. Think of novels, tv shows, and movies that are heavily influenced by the setting.

Setting The setting entails: ·the place ·the time ·the social situation/cultural environment in which a story takes place. The setting dictates a character’s personality and development.

How Setting impacts Characters Determining the living conditions and jobs available to them Shaping their personalities their dreams, and their values. Example Setting: A poor, drought-stricken Midwestern farm town in the 1930’s “Despite months of grueling work, Joe’s crops are failing again. Realizing that his life may never improve, he becomes bitter and angry.”

Agenda Today we will read an article about the 1920’s so we have more background information on a vital part of Gatsby’s setting. Properly Annotate the article. Write a one page response to the article… How will the setting impact the characters in TGG? Comment your thoughts on the 1920’s and the article in general. Why is this time period glorified? What similarities are you starting to see with Fitzgerald’s life and the characters in Gatsby.

Agenda 2/14 Quiz Chapter 2 Chapter 2 activities Start chapter 3?

Bell Work 2/15 On a seperate sheet of paper... Create a literary analysis paragraph for chapters 1 and 2 of The Great Gatsby. Explain Fitzgerald’s craft moves and use of literary techniques in a well constructed 10-12 sentence paragraph. Use excerpts from the text to support topic sentence. Include a concluding sentence. You have 10-15 minutes.

Trade and Grade Read through your partner's paragraph. Underline the topic sentence. Circle the craft moves and literary devices. Underline excerpts. Do they include a page number? Underline the conclusion sentence. Do the excerpts support the topic sentence? What feedback do you have for them. Give them a score out of 10 and explain why.

Agenda 2/15 Literary analysis practice and peer editing. Chapter 3 & 4 need to be read by Wednesday, February 20th!
