Issues Research-LEED Analysis Problem: LEED projects cause G.C’s and Sub’s to transfer cost increases and schedule increases to clients without analysis. In turn this can cause owners to be hesitant to build LEED rated buildings. Solution: Education of methods and materials to the construction workforce as well as benefits to owners. Research Goal: Via interviews, surveys, and phone conversation; to find the roots of the misconceptions of LEED design and prove or disprove ignorance through a detailed analysis of LEED points. Expected Outcome: Through education of the workforce cost increases and schedule increases will become less prevalent.

Emergency Electrical System Analysis- Breadth #1 Problem: Full operation of the building under separate power source in the event of national or statewide emergency. Solution: Redesign of electrical system and cost/ schedule analysis of proposed change. Expected Outcome: An increased cost associated with the design change. Overall schedule impact will be significant.

Curtain Wall Analysis- Breadth #2 Problem: Curtain wall installation needs two months in the current schedule. Solution: New method for construction and/or different curtain wall system. Expected Outcome: Constructability will yield moderate decreases in cost and schedule. The use of a alternate system will provide the schedule decrease needed with a significant cost increase. Use of alternate system will require a structural analysis.

Structural Steel Analysis Problem: Steel sizes are atypical and local mill runs will not be able to accommodate the project. Solution: Re-sizing of steel members to next largest size available in structural steel warehouses. Expected Outcome: Significant increase in steel contract with no schedule impact.
