Tips and Tricks for Getting Started with ArcGIS Solutions Howard Crothers

What is in an ArcGIS Solution? A ready to use map or app Is part of ArcGIS Provides industry specific Geospatial workflows Best practices

ArcGIS Solutions characteristics Free Fully supported Continually updated and enhanced Well documented Open source Driven by a user community

ArcGIS Includes 350+ Ready-to-Use Solutions Organized by 9 Primary Domains

Have the Proper Expectations about ArcGIS Solutions A Solution probably won’t do everything your organization needs Might not have the exact workflow your organization wants But likely does most of the geospatial functionality you require for a workflow ...Doing most of what you want for free is very valuable

How Do You Find Solutions? Go to solutions.arcgis.com Explore by domain Then use the gallery to keyword search You may find useful Solutions outside of your domain

Find Solutions solutions.arcgis.com

What Solutions Should you Start With? Solutions that are most impactful to your organization Solutions that are easier to deploy Typically Solutions that use ArcGIS Online are easy to deploy And Solutions that edit or analyze in the desktop are harder to deploy But may be more impactful

Before you Implement a Solution, Explore It Read the item overview Understand the requirements Use the “Try It Now” Read the help Can be configured in your environment with sample data

If a Solution… Doesn’t do everything you need Use it anyway! If it can provide some positive benefit to your organization Consider filling gaps with other ArcGIS components or customizations Doesn’t have the workflow you want Consider changing your workflow …you can customize a Solution to better fit your organization

Don’t Focus on Just The Schema Each ArcGIS Solution includes an information model Maps documents, web maps, services, schema necessary to power map or app Included for users who don’t have an information model capable of deploying the solution You aren’t required to use the information model we provide If your information model can quickly support deploying the app Use your information model If not, use the one we provide or modify yours A publication environment and ETL may make deployment easier

A Word of Caution about Migrating to Information Models Your focus should be on deploying useful applications not migrating information models If you have a mature implementation, your initial effort shouldn’t be migrating to an information model Such as the Local Government Information Model or the Utility and Pipeline Data Model If you don’t have a mature implementation… adopt the information model and start to populate it by deploying useful apps

Ready to Implement? Download Configure Deploy

Typical Solution Deployment Patterns Desktop solutions Solutions that leverage ArcGIS Portal Technology Collector for ArcGIS Web Apps Solutions that leverage WebApp Builder JavaScript web apps that require a web server Solutions that set up your mapping portal ArcGIS Online Model Organization for <> …Understand the pattern and easily repeat to deloy new Solutions

Need to Set Up a Mapping Portal for Your Organization? Use the appropriate ArcGIS Online Model Organization for <> Includes groups, thumbnails, permissions, sharing, etc.

Many Organizations Use an Agile Methodology To Incrementally Make Solutions Better Fit Needs Plan Design Configure / Code Test / Feedback Keep iterations brief (~30 days) Involve stakeholders Stop | restart at any time Configurations accelerate delivery Next? Envision Iteration 1 Iteration 2 Iteration 3 Next? Done
