Golf Anyone A Math Task

July 14th, 2013 was an amazing day for Jordan Spieth; he won a PGA Tournament event at the age of 19! This is something that Tiger Woods and Phil Michelson never did. In order to complete this win, Jordan had to compete in four days of golf. Each day he played a round of golf. Your task is to create either a horizontal or vertical number line that accurately represents Jordan’s day of golf. You will need to demonstrate that you understand and can justify your sum in this real-world problem. Be sure to include the additive inverse property in your justification.

What you need to know about golf... There are 18 holes in a round of golf. Each of the holes has a par. A par is how many times an experienced golfer should hit the ball to get it in the hole. There can be a par of 3, 4, or 5. EXAMPLE: If a hole has a par of 4, a golfer should hit the ball 4 times to get it in the hole. However, a golfer could hit it 3 time (this is GOOD) or a golfer could hit it 5 times (this is BAD). A golfer gets -1 point if he hits the ball 3 times on a par 4. A golfer gets 0 points if he hits the ball 4 times on a par 4. A golfer gets 1 point if he hits the ball 5 times on a par 4.

Your task requires you to create a horizontal or vertical number line to represent Jordan Spieth's score in the PGA Tournament. The Tournament lasted five days. The first four days were full 18 hole rounds. The fifth day was a play off and only 3 holes were played. It might be a good idea to assign each member a round of golf as you will only have one day to complete this task.

The materials you will use are: blank number lines markers construction paper copy paper Ask if you need something else.

Follow Up Questions Is a horizontal or vertical number line easier to use? Why do you think this? Is there a right way for the number line to be? Why do you think this? Does anyone have a rule for inverse operations? How is absolute value demonstrated in the number lines?
