Transactional versus analytical data Transactional Database Captures data describing an event Supports management of an organization’s data For everyday transactions Analytical Data Store Extracted from transactional data Supports managerial decision-making Used in analysis and reporting Database: Software to manage the storage & retrieval of data Data store: Generic; anywhere data is stored (i.e., a text file)

Why do we need both? Transactional Database Analytical Data Store Analysis ready data Fast for data retrieval Does not minimize redundancy Uses storage space inefficiently Not native format for analysis Minimizes redundancy Uses storage space efficiently Slow for data retrieval Good for maintaining high quality, high accuracy data Good for performing high speed data analytics
