Bell-Ringer In your notebook, write what you think is the definition of: Epithet Formidable “Old men are often awarded the “I am Laertes’ son, Odysseus. epithet ‘dirty’”. Men hold me formidable for guile in peace and war” (126-29).

Drawing Conclusions In The Odyssey

Purpose for Reading Enjoy the beautiful poetry! Enjoy the adventure! Answer this Essential Question: What conclusions can be drawn about Odysseus as both a leader and a man through his interactions with his crew, his adversaries, and the gods? This is why our focus for the day is drawing conclusions. You want to be adding you ideas about the text, not just summarizing. What insight can you lend to the deeper meanings in the text?

Teacher-Led - “I am Laertes’ son…” Turn to pg. 1043 in your textbook

Teacher-Led - “I am Laertes’ son…” Copy this chart on a new sheet in your notebook. You will use the chart throughout the lesson: Cite the Source Real Life Connection Draw Conclusion In doing this, we are moving away from summarizing and working toward making analytical commentary about the text. Our job is to draw conclusions about Odysseus as a leader and man from specific citations and making connections between what we learn and real life.

Teacher-Led - “I am Laertes’ son…” We are using this Three-Step-Draw- Conclusions graphic organizer to draw upon our personal real-life knowledge and experience to make conclusions about Odysseus as a leader and man. How do men in real life act? How do leaders in real life act?

We Do - “The Lotus Eaters” Read “The Lotus Eaters” (pg. 1046-1047) On the same page as your bell-ringer, write a 1-2 sentence summary of the events of the section. 5 minutes

We Do - “The Lotus Eaters” Watch this short video clip! https://vimeo.com/57105917 Fill out an entry on your chart and draw a conclusion based on your personal experience. 5 minutes 2 minutes
