Student Success: The First Task is to Overcome Pernicious Myths Myths may have a small amount of truth in them But there are very, very wrong (don’t fall into their traps) “College is an Entitlement” Even if it were fully paid for, it still isn’t an entitlement A student builds an education—incrementally and progressively “College is Entertainment” Some parts of College classes seem “fun” (e.g., videos, etc.) A student is a contributor, not just a consumer

Student Success: The First Task is to Overcome Pernicious Myths “Attendance doesn’t matter” It’s true that some classes don’t “take attendance” Attendance is really about commitment → participation → engagement “Punctuality doesn’t matter” It’s true that a student can be “late” to some classes At root, this is really a cultural issue. U.S.-based professionals show up on-time So U.S.-based professionals plan for contingencies (and well)
