Rent and La Bohème Rent is an updated version of La Bohème, which was about a plague. Rent changed the plague to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in 1980s.
No Day But Today - The Story of Rent Written by Jonathan Larson (1960 - 1996) and based on his life experiences living as a “starving artist” in NYC while writing musicals. Worked in a diner on weekends to survive Rent (1996) was a groundbreaking rock-musical that addressed contemporary social issues. “Changed the face of American musical theater” for the MTV generation. Died before the first performance of Rent in 1996. Possibly from undiagnosed Marfan Syndrome. Earned three posthumous Tony Awards and a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Rent. Rent was inspired by Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème
