A Guessing Game Guess what it could be! Class Exercise 2/8/19 Chinese Inventions I A Guessing Game Guess what it could be! Class Exercise 2/8/19

Directions: Make two columns in your notebook under the title Chinese Inventions I like below. Guess 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Actual Invention:

Clue: This invention allowed Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi to unite all of China in 221 B.C. Actual Invention: This is the trigger mechanism to a Chinese Crossbow – made of Bronze – and was standardized – so its parts could be replaced when worn or broken.

CLUE: This Chinese Invention made keeping “the books” in your family business much easier! Actual Invention: This is called the Abacus – it was invented in Han China about 100 A.D. and can be used much like a calculator today.

CLUE: Without this it would be hard to keep our appointments, get to school on time, or even change classes! Actual Invention: The Mechanical Clock – invented in the 8th century during the Tang Dynasty in China.

Clue: This invention helps us celebrate holidays and special occasions. Actual Invention: Gunpowder Fireworks! Invented during the Song Dynasty at first as a food additive – (the first “power” drink) it quickly became a favorite crowd entertainer for stage pyrotechnics.

Clue: This invention aided in Communication over long distances Actual Invention: The Kite! Not just a childhood pastime. Kites were used by Chinese armies to communicate over long distances. Kites are also man made controlled flight – a first step in making a flying machine!

Clue: With this device Chinese population surged! Actual Invention: The Seed Drill. Invented during Han times, Plants the seeds at a consistent depth and covers them (birds can’t eat). The device made farmers’ job easier and highly improved the agricultural output in China.

Clue: his invention likely keeps many of you busy after dinner! Actual Invntion: Porcelain – A.K.A. “china” The first true porcelain was invented during the Tang Dynasty. It was slowly perfected over 1000 years. It became a highly prized luxury item that we still use today, more commonly called “dishes.”

Clue: This invention helps define the uniqueness of your culture Actual Invention: Musical Instruments! Obviously not only a Chinese invention, music in China was unique not only for the types of instruments and the sounds they play but also because China had the an Imperial Music Bureau to help organize “official” court and military “tunes.” This shows that the Chinese Government knew how powerful music could be to motivate “the People” and make them happy.

Main Idea: When a society is prosperous it has the resources needed for fantastic innovations… BUT sometimes when a society is prosperous it creates ways to separate the society into powerful hierarchies. For Example …

The Scholar Official! Scholar Officials were “white collar” workers who had powerful government jobs that they earned by passing a series of very difficult tests. The series of tests were known as the Examination System.
