Study Goals Analyze traffic operations along the corridor and at the two study interchanges Provide safety enhancements Improve multimodal performance and better accommodate pedestrians Minimize potential construction costs
Study Area Our study area is the section of NC 54/US 15-501 between Raleigh Rd and NC 86 (South Columbia St) and includes: US 15-501 & Raleigh Rd (Interchange) US 15-501 & Old Mason Farm Rd US 15-501 & Manning Dr US 15-501 & South Columbia St (Interchange)
Study Area Chapel Hill US 15-501 Raleigh Rd NC 54 Manning Dr Old Mason Farm Rd NC 86 US 15-501
Preliminary Assumptions – Raleigh Rd Study Scenarios: Existing Year (2016) No-Build Future Year (2030) Build Peak Hours: Weekday AM Weekday PM Annual growth rate of 1%
Design Concept – Raleigh Rd
Preliminary Results & Observations – Raleigh Rd Two proposed signals on Raleigh Rd and one on NC 54/US 15-501 south of Raleigh Rd all intersecting with ramps Proposed signals are operating at LOS C or better during weekday peak hours Improves safety at interchange by eliminating weave segments on Raleigh Rd Better accommodates pedestrians by providing crosswalks/ped phasing at signals on Raleigh Rd Old Mason Farm Rd/Carmichael Ct intersection is operating at LOS E during the AM peak and LOS F during the PM Not really a short term option, need to do something different
Design Concept – Old Mason Farm Rd Concept re-routes traffic to spread the impact over 2 intersections. Short Term solution (access changes), Long Term solution (Continuous Green T) Short term, close off access and put in new two phase signal, longer term go to Continuous Green T US 15-501 Farm Rd Old Mason
Design Concept – Manning Dr Concept re-routes traffic to spread the impact over 2 intersections. Short Term solution (access changes), Long Term solution (Continuous Green T) Manning Rd US 15-501 Kings Mill Rd Short term, close off access and put in new two phase signal, longer term go to Continuous Green T
Corridor Approach Synchronized Street concept on US 15-501; between Manning Dr & Old Mason Farm Rd US 15-501 IF you don’t want to close approaches can go to more of a traditional superstreet Old Mason Farm Rd
Preliminary Assumptions – NC 86 Study Scenarios: Existing Year (2014) No-Build Future Year (2040) Build Peak Hours: Weekday AM Weekday PM Utilizing volumes from US 15-501 Widening – Project Level Traffic Forecast (U-5304)
Design Concept – NC 86 Evaluating grade separated intersection idea that was developed by Dr. Hummer Will analyze after concurrence with Hummer’s concept
