Letting nonfiction reading on an issue spur flash-debates Lesson three Letting nonfiction reading on an issue spur flash-debates

Connection: flash debates I was watching 20/20 on abc recently and they had a story about how tourists are hurting Antarctica. My friends and I debated what we learned after watching the show… “Wow, people shouldn’t really go to Antarctica . Tourism is hurting the environment.” “Year, but Antarctica is one of the most mysterious and unique places on the planet. How can there not be tourism there? Finally… after a few back and forth comments… “So we really need to know exactly how many people go there and exactly what damage is caused and what long-term effects of that damage are.”

Teaching point! Today I want to teach you that after reading about an issue for a bit, nonfiction readers can let their research spur quick flash-debates. This can help you clarify your thinking and know what further research you need to do.

Chocolate milk In schools for against CM has nutrients Cm gets kids to drink more milk Kids who drink cm don’t consume more sugar, fat, or calories School nutrition association– new study– kids drink 35% less milk on average when flavor is gone (severson) To qualify for fed. $, pub. Schools must serve milk. Cm has more sugar than soda- almost 30 grams (sugar overload) Cm contains unnatural sugar (cane/high fructose) (severson) Too much milk can make kids too full to eat other, healthier food

Prepare for a flash-debate Decide which partner is on the for and against side You will need to come up with one reason to support your position and find evidence to go with your reason. Boxes and bullets can help you organize your information. You have two minutes to prepare and then we will debate! Go!

Let’s debate!

Let’s reflect on our debates What was your partner’s best piece of evidence? Why?

Prepare for group flash debates Today, you will be having quick flash-debates with your group members. Half of the group will argue for and the other half will argue the other side. To prepare… You need to think more about the topic and figure of what to research further You will need to do more reading and research You may also want to reread your notes from yesterday.
