How many of these do you recognise?

How many of these are British brands? So how do you know about them? The world is getting smaller… How many of these are British brands?

Globalisation L.O: To understand the impact of globalisation and to evaluate whether we have a responsibility to take action Globalisation = “the process by which businesses or other organisations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale” (Oxford dictionary)

So what do we mean by Globalisation? For example… If a company in England pollutes the atmosphere, does the pollution stay in England? If a ship spills oil in the English Channel, does the oil stay in English waters? Have you ever ordered something off the internet that was shipped from another country? What country were your trainers made in? Or your coat? Why are items made in other countries often cheaper than British-made products? 5

Impact Advantage Disadvantage Increase in brands   World trade Increase in global travel Global communication

Increase in brands Provides jobs Workers are poorly paid Example: Cambodia

Increase in global travel Cheaper travel People become more culturally aware Eco tourism More pollution – carbon footprint Previously baron beaches now lined with ugly hotels Tourists do not bring about long lasting change, voluntary work is fashionable and for individual gain.

World trade Better awareness of global issues through the mass media has lead to more responsible consumerism. Many farmers trapped in poverty by being under paid for their produce by companies that have a monopoly.

Global communication Raised awareness of global issues Communication with family and friends High street stores lose out to Internet shopping Media dependency, control of information

Pair & Share: If you knew that the person who made your trainers was paid very little money, would it make you think differently about buying them? What if it was a child? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a_D-azUogg

At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day According to UNICEF, 26,500-30,000 children die each day due to poverty. At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day There are 2.2 billion children in the world. 1 billion live in poverty Less than one per cent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn’t happen

But what can we do? Raise awareness Donate to charities Campaign (convince power players to make a change) Boycott / Buycott

“It is the responsibility of the consumers to end sweatshops” Do you agree? (12 marks) You could think about the following points: - what are the issues? - do consumers have any responsibility to think about who makes their clothes? - what could consumers do? Remember: I Aint Doing Crap! (Intro, Agree, Disagree, Conclusion).
