The Resurrection

Jesus said “I am the resurrection and the life he who believes in me will live even though he dies

62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. MATTHEW 27

63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ MATTHEW 27

destroy this temple and I will raise it the sign of Jonah From that time Jesus began to show to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day (Matthew 16:21).

64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day.

64 Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead.

65 “Take a guard,” Pilate answered 65 “Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.”

66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.

1 “After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. MATTHEW 28

2 “There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.

3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. MATTHEW 28

4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. MATTHEW 28

11 While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened.

12 When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money,

13 telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ MATTHEW 27

13 telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ MATTHEW 27

The Resurrection

You’re going to think I’m a heretic, but in the Gospels the resurrection is a bit of a non-event, it’s a bit of an anti-climax

Mathew after ch27 and before ch28 Mark after ch15 and before ch16 Luke after ch23 and before 24 John after ch19 and before 20

2 “There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.

Acts 2:24 New International Version (NIV) 24 But God raised him from the dead, [ ] because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.

THE APOSTLES CREED born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

Luke 23:46 New International Version (NIV) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[a] When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Luke 23:43 New International Version (NIV) 43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Who is the first person to work out that Jesus has risen from the dead?

1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. John 20

2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” John 20

3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb   3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. John 20

5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. John 20

6 Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. John 20

The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen   The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. John 20

9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) John 20
