Volume 133, Issue 6, Pages 1821-1830 (December 2007) Reduction in Hepatitis C–Related Liver Disease Associated With GB Virus C in Human Immunodeficiency Virus Coinfection  Mark D. Berzsenyi, D. Scott Bowden, Heath A. Kelly, Kerrie M. Watson, Anne M. Mijch, Rachel A. Hammond, Suzanne M. Crowe, Stuart K. Roberts  Gastroenterology  Volume 133, Issue 6, Pages 1821-1830 (December 2007) DOI: 10.1053/j.gastro.2007.08.076 Copyright © 2007 AGA Institute Terms and Conditions

Figure 1 Selection process for the identification of HCV and HIV coinfected subjects for assessment of GBV-C status. All recruitment occurred from January 1996 onward in the post-HAART era. Figure 2 Development of cirrhosis according to GBV-C RNA. A significant reduction in the proportion who developed cirrhosis, either compensated or decompensated, was associated with active GBV-C in Kaplan–Meier estimates as a function of days from diagnosis of HCV infection (P = .006) (panel A) and days from diagnosis of HIV infection (P = .006) (panel B). The duration of known HIV infection was longer than known HCV infection because reliable testing for HIV has been widely available longer than for HCV. Vertical hatches indicate follow-up time for patients who did not experience cirrhosis. Figure 3 Liver-related death and overall survival according to GBV-C RNA. No association was observed in Kaplan–Meier analysis of liver-related death vs days from diagnosis of HCV (P = .13) (panel A) or days from diagnosis of HIV (P = .22) (panel B). Furthermore, Kaplan–Meier analysis showed no effect on overall survival according to GBV-C status as function of days from diagnosis of either HCV infection (P = .38) (panel C) or days from diagnosis of HIV infection (P = .21) (panel D). Vertical hatches indicate follow-up time for surviving patients. Gastroenterology 2007 133, 1821-1830DOI: (10.1053/j.gastro.2007.08.076) Copyright © 2007 AGA Institute Terms and Conditions
