Unit 4 Notes: Common Skeletal & Muscular Disorders

(1) Spine Defects Cause: Treatment: Frequent incorrect posture. Congenital development. Treatment: Surgery, Spinal Braces, Start standing correctly. Scoliosis: Lateral deviation of the spine. Lordosis: Inward curvature of the spine. Kyphosis: Outward curvature of the spine.

(2) Arthritis Inflammation of joint/s. Cause: Treatment: Immune disorder Natural deterioration of cartilage Excessive movement/force on joint/s Treatment: Surgery, Medication, Stop moving like that 

(3) Osteoporosis Loss of bone cells (pores in your bone). Cause: Skeletal infection/disease. Loss of hormones, Vitamin D, Magnesium, Calcium Decrease in muscle mass and physical activity Treatment: Medication, Change in Diet & Exercise

(4) Gout Joint pain due to an accumulation of salts and solid particulates within the fluid between joints. Caused: Excess uric acid within blood. Typically caused by a change in physical activity or consuming excessive fish/seafood. Could also be caused by a metabolic disorder. Treatment: Change in diet, Medication

(5) Rickets Outward curvature of leg bones. Cause: Treatment: Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy. Child is born with partially developed bones. Treatment: Surgery, Leg Braces, Physical Therapy

(6) Muscular Dystrophy Muscle weakness or a loss of muscle mass. Not able to move/control parts of body. Cause: Genetic Treatment: Physical Therapy No cure

(7) Fibromyalgia Can fall under the category of muscular, skeletal and nervou system disorder. Cause: Overactivity of neurons. Victims are overly sensitive at random, unpredictable times to changes in weather—diet—and body position. Treatment: No cure
