Breathing & Respiration Lesson 2: Respiration Year 7 Week 12 Breathing & Respiration Lesson 2: Respiration

Title: Respiration WALT: State the respiration equation and where respiration takes place Must know the respiration equation Should describe where respiration takes place and where the reactants come from 3. Could analyse an experiment to state how it mimics respiration

Last lesson we learnt: That gas exchange occurs in the …………….. That we breathe in ……….. and breathe out ………………… Oxygen is needed for ……………….. Today, we will learn what respiration is.

First we will go through your prep on answering questions correctly Then fill in the bottom of your sheet on the lungs

You are now going to measure your lung volume Fitter people have bigger lungs The average lung volume of an adult is 4-6 litres Write down a hypothesis about what you expect to see about your lung capacity and why We will write down the class results on the board and see who has the highest lung capacity Group so that 2 girls pair up with 2 boys Can record all results from whole class if want and see how difference between boys and girls

Answer these questions: Apart from fitness, what other things do you think will influence someone’s lung volume? If we compare our lung volumes as a class, do you think it was a fair test? Give reasons for your answer. In higher altitudes, people produce more red blood cells (these carry oxygen to the cells). Athletes often come to mountainous areas of Kenya to train. Why do you think this helps their performance?

Plenary The passage of air through the body: The lungs are positioned inside the ………….. …………….. The ………… form a cage protecting them. The ………..lung has ………… cavities is bigger than the ………… lung which only has ……….. The action of breathing means that the lungs are constantly moving in and out. In order to prevent friction, the lungs are surrounded by the ………………. ………………… This is a complete lining which is smooth and has a moist, slimy mucus. two three right left chest cavity pleural membrane Or Sheet 8Bd/4

REMEMBER, BREATHING IS NOT THE SAME AS RESPIRATION!!

Respiration is a chemical reaction Oxygen + glucose carbon + water dioxide + energy

All living things respire

All cells respire in order to make energy Respiration is used by all cells for energy to enable them to function, grow, reproduce and repair

What is gas exchange? The process of oxygen and carbon dioxide moving between the lungs and the blood. It takes place in the alveoli. Oxygen goes from the lungs in to the blood Carbon dioxide from the cells move through the blood and out of the lungs

We will come back to gas exchange next lesson Capillary We will come back to gas exchange next lesson Watch the clip

The gases move by diffusion. How do the gases move? The gases move by diffusion. Diffusion is the process by where gases move from a high concentration to a low concentration: Oxygen diffuses from the air in the alveoli into the blood. Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the air in the alveoli. Capillary

In pairs Please discuss and write down 3 ways you think the alveoli might be well adapted for their function of gas exchange (think back to the villi for inspiration) Capillary

Adaptations of the alveoli for gas exchange: They have moist, thin walls (just one cell thick) They give the lungs a really big surface area They have a lot of tiny blood vessels called capillaries

How can we test for carbon dioxide? Use limewater to show that you breathe out carbon dioxide DO NOT SUCK ON THE STRAW!

Plenary Write down 3 facts learnt today that you didn’t know Discuss your facts with your partner and add to your list
