Presentation transcript:

Opening Activity: Oct. 2, 2018 If you did NOT pick up the materials from front table yesterday, please do so now: Current Event Article (O2 or CO2) Concepts, Vocabulary & Reflection due Thursday 10/4 Notebook Rubric – you can turn your notebook in Wed, Thursday or Friday 10/5 2. Write the above due dates in your planner! I can… Share what I know about animals on the animal pretest and animals initial ideas. Homework: CVR due 10/4 Notebook due 10/5

Today’s Tasks Complete your Animal Pretest, go to class website and log into test online. Set up your notebook for Animal Unit and Set an Academic Goal. (see Whiteboard for set up) Pick up class copy of “Christian Bale Article” and “The Transformation of Christian Bale” page which will serve as your initial ideas for this unit. Fold your “Transformation of CB” page in half and tape into your journal after your CVR. On the folded white portion of the paper answer the following questions: Some refer to Bale as a “shape-shifting” actor, what do you think they mean? What are Bale’s strategies to gain or lose weight? What are some of the blockbuster hits Bale has been in? Unfold the “Transformation of CB” and answer the questions the best you can.

Opening Activity: Oct. 3, 2018 Have your Molecule project at table ready to turn in. Make sure your rubric is attached. Grab a whiteboard for your table. Draw out an equation to combust cellulose: C6H10O5 Identify matter changes Identify energy changes 3. As a group determine the 3 criteria to decide if something is organic or inorganic. I can… Share ideas about animals. Learn from my peers about different biological molecules. Homework: CVR due 10/4 Notebook due 10/5

Systems and Scale Test 32.4-36 A (60%) 28.8-32 B (25%) 25.2 – 28.5 C 21.5-25 D Below 21.5 E System & Scale Test Retake(up to 30.5 pts)– Complete a retake ticket – due 10/8 Sign up to retake: Thursday 10/11 8am Thursday 10/11 Homeroom 302 Monday 10/15 8am

Expressing Your Ideas Use this tool to record your ideas about how you think Christian Bale transformed his body for different roles. Or you may simply think how he has grown from a small boy to an adult man to play different roles. It’s okay if you don’t know the “right answer” at this point! Students complete the Expressing Ideas Tool on their own. Show slide 4 of the 1.2 Expressing Ideas about How Animals Grow PPT. Tell students that now they will take a few minutes to think and record their ideas about what happens when animals grow on their own. Give each student one copy of 1.2 Expressing Ideas Tool for Animals Growing. Give students about 5 minutes to complete the tool as individuals. Encourage students to think about things they have seen in the world to help inform their ideas.

Sharing your ideas…. In your large group have a go-around so all ideas and questions have been heard. Make two sticky notes of your table discussions: Group idea Group question 3. Put your sticky notes on the class initial ideas sheet.

What Happens When Animals Grow? Your ideas: Your questions: Post ideas for class discussion. Tell students that now that they have had a chance to write their ideas as individuals and as pairs, it is important to look at the range of ideas in the class. Again, at this point, do not correct any wrong ideas. Treat this as brainstorming: all ideas are on the table. Show slide 6 of the 1.2 Expressing Ideas about How Animals Grow PPT. Give each pair 2 sticky notes. Tell students to write their most important idea from their Expressing Ideas Tools on a sticky note and put it on the board under the “Your Ideas” column. Tell students to write their most important question from their Expressing Ideas Tools on a sticky note and put it on the board under the “Your Questions” column.

Save for later Later, you will compare your ideas from today to your predictions and explanations. Save the Expressing Ideas Tools for later. Show slide 9 of the 1.2 Expressing Ideas about How Animals Grow PPT. Tell students that they will revisit these ideas later in the unit to see how their thinking changes. The class can also return to shared ideas on Slide 7.

Molecule Project – Gallery Walk What is one new fact/idea you learned. List one similarity between this project and your own.

Opening Activity: Oct. 4, 2018 I will stamp two items – CVR and “Christian Bale Transformation”. Please have available. Create an Opening Activity Section in your journal. We will have 17 days in unit, create the pages you need. When looking under the microscope at living organisms, how do you know they are alive? List characteristics. Find Lab #4 at your table. Create a new page and write: Lab #4 Animal Cells What do animal cells look like? What structures are present in animal cells? I can… Identify and describe animal cells Homework: Notebook Due 10/5 SS Retake Ticket due 10/8

New seats for our animal and cell unit!

Lab # 4 Animal Cells Question: Today’s Goals: What do animal cells look like? What structures are present in animal cells to perform cellular functions? Today’s Goals: 1. Sketch cheek cells at two powers. Sketch another animal at two powers. Use Insights Biology textbook page 102 or 352 to determine visible structures of your cells and complete first column on #3.

Clean up…. Be sure microscopes are on the “tape” away from the edge. You do NOT need to put cover on. Be sure your iodine slide goes into the alcohol solution. Toothpicks in garbage!
