Literacy Planning a Unit Dominc Davis - ECaW

High Quality Planning… Has a clear focus Has a clear outcome Targets progression Meets the needs of all learners Engages children Provides motivation Dominc Davis - ECaW

Planning a Unit Identify the end of unit outcome. What do you want children to be able to do by the end of the unit? What will be the context of their writing? How long do you need to allocate for this unit? Dominc Davis - ECaW

Learning Objectives What objectives do we need to cover to enable the children to achieve the unit outcome? These objectives need to be our main focus for teaching and learning during the unit. Dominc Davis - ECaW

WOW! Each unit should include a WOW start. This should be an activity or text selected for maximum impact to motivate and engage the children. It should incorporate an element of reading and text investigation or allow for an immediate response in writing. Dominc Davis - ECaW

Key Texts Identify any key texts that you will use to explore the text type and to engage the children. Select texts that are accessible to children and are suitable for enriching the unit, also enabling you to deliver the unit objectives. Be familiar with the key texts before you begin teaching. Dominc Davis - ECaW

Modelled and Shared Writing What will be the focus of your modelled and shared writing sessions? Modelled writing is when you demonstrate the writing process, emphasising specific teaching points. Shared writing (scribing) is when you involve the children in composition by asking for their ideas, but you refine their ideas before you scribe. Dominc Davis - ECaW

Guided Writing What will be the focus of your guided writing sessions? Guided writing has a clear focus and is linked to the specific needs of the group. Dominc Davis - ECaW

Key Messages Ignore the ‘time guidance’ for each unit. You decide how many days are needed for children to achieve the unit outcome. Only include activities from the overview that are inspiring or will engage children. Be clear on what you want the children to be able to do by the end of the unit. Dominc Davis - ECaW

Key Messages Have a clear writing focus throughout the unit. Make it fun – we want children to want to write and enjoy the writing process. Be flexible and be prepared to change your plans based on AfL. Dominc Davis - ECaW
