Decision Dashboard I like to point out that the Decision Dashboard has not only our decision support tools, but also links to other decision support tools, the latest reports from national/regional climate information centers, and weather/climate graphics for the Corn Belt.

Split Nitrogen Application This tool is designed to help farmers and farm advisors understand the risks and benefits of using post-planting nitrogen (N) application for corn production. The tool combines historical weather and fieldwork data with economic considerations to determine the feasibility and profitability of completing a second (split) N application within a user-specified time period. This tool may help you with decisions that: Increase corn yields Reduce nitrogen costs Reduce nitrogen losses to the environment Affect the likelihood of completing in-season fieldwork.

Details on Crop/Equipment Users enter the planting date for the corn crop, the yield goal for the field, the initial nitrogen application, the stage of the corn during the 2nd application of nitrogen, the window for the nitrogen application, the yield and nitrogen impacts from the 2nd application (or lack thereof), the prices and costs, and details about the equipment, acres, and working days/hours.

Economic Analysis The Economic Analysis covers several different cases. The first case assumes the 2nd nitrogen application is completed on all targeted acres, gives the historical likelihood of that occurring, and shows the potential financial and environmental benefits of the split application. The 2nd case shows the average acres that have been completed based on historical weather patterns (if the targeted acres is below the average, then the target acreage appears here). The 3rd case shows the worst case scenario based on historical weather patterns. The best case scenario and the breakeven number of acres are also detailed.

Acres Completed Summary The Acres Completed Summary summarizes the results in both a table and a graph. The table provides four different ending dates and shows the historical percentiles for acreage that can be covered with a split nitrogen application. The graph shows the historical data for the acreage that could be covered during the projected window for nitrogen application.

Crop Calendar Summary The Crop Calendar Summary outlines the stages for the corn crop, the estimated growing degree days to reach the stages, the current estimated date for the corn crop to reach the stage, and the historical range when the corn crop has reached this stage in the past.
