Physics An introduction

What is Physics? Physics is the branch of science that involves the study of the physical world. Physics is the study of matter and energy and their relationships. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved. Section 1.1

Scientific Method Scientific Method - the process of experimentation and explanation No concept or model of nature is valid unless the predictions are in agreement with experimental results. Hypotheses/Theories must withstand testing and may be modified or even rejected. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved. Section 1.2

Galileo and the Scientific Method Galileo is considered to be the father of modern experimental science. The scientific method is a systematic way of going about solving a problem. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved.

The Senses Sight, Hearing, Smell, Taste, Touch Sight and Hearing provide the most information to our brains about our environment. Sensory Limitations – can be reduced by using measuring devices Instruments extend our ability to measure and learn about our environment. Our senses can also be deceived -> Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved. Section 1.3
