Life (1) born in Moravia (the birthplace of Comenius is not known; there are three possible locations) –early orphaned (1604) education: –1608–11 Academy of Unity of the Brethren (Přerov) –1611–14 Academy at Herborn and the University of Heidelberg from 1614 – pastor and school principal in towns Přerov, Fulnek – near Ostrava (1618 the Thirty Years war began) after 1620 – persecuted under the Counter Reformation, was a fugitive in his own country (his young wife and two children died of the plague 1622) 1628 – fled Moravia to Poland, in Leszno led gymnasium
