Modern issues in Southwest Asia Unit 7 Day 5 Chapter 23

Why are people moving to the city? Oil boom caused large amount of progress People moved from the country to the city Many unfilled jobs Foreigners migrate here to work Guest workers can outnumber native workers

What about political refugees? Stateless nation - a nation of people without land to occupy Kurds - group of people with no land In 2000, Iraqi gov’t used chemical weapons to forcibly remove 70,000 Kurds Palestinians’ former land is part of Israel today Several countries have tried to control the Kurds but the Kurds have resisted. In 2000, Iraqi government used chemical weapons to force 70,000 Kurds from their homes.

Refugees cont’d Many Palestinians considered stateless nation 520,000 to 1,000,000 fled homes in Israel Forced to live in camps or other parts of SW Asia 4.3 million people displaced so far! Fled during war between Israel and Arab nations

How does oil impact change? Strategic commodity – a commodity nations go to war over to ensure a steady supply of SW Asia will most likely produce 50% of world’s oil supply Many countries based their economies on this one commodity

Why is it dangerous to base your economy on one commodity? Your Thoughts? Why is it dangerous to base your economy on one commodity?

How is oil helping to expand? It’s not always well coordinated Improving roadways Removing salt from saltwater Building dams and tapping into underground water Saudi Arabia improved their water supply & now create enough grain to even export it UAE built 4 airports in an area the size of Maine Saudi Arabia was importing most of their grain. Improved water supply. Now create enough grain to meet their needs and to export!

Diversity for ALL people? Several nations realize they must invest in people, including women However, education and employment is NOT open to women in every country Shortage in workers has opened up opportunities for women Kuwait gives free education up to university level Gov’t helps pay for students who want to study outside the country Kuwait has established free education through the university level. Gov’t helps pay for students that want to study outside of the country.
