East China Normal University A Platform with Video-case Study for Professional Development of Mathematics Teachers: Focusing on Practice-based Teaching Competency Hang Chen, Jian-sheng Bao East China Normal University Shanghai, China

Outline What is Practice-based Teaching Competency(PTC)? Why focus on PTC in teacher professional development ? How to construct the model of PTC ? How to develop teachers’ PTC based on the Platform of Video Case Study(PVCS)? 2018-11-22

1. What is PTC ? Practice-based Teaching Competency(PTC) As a well know facts, teacher’s work is a knowledge-based practice, but too many researches were focusing on teachers’ knowledge and few of them pay attention in teaching practice. We think what’s more important is how to transform the knowledge into effective teaching competency, this is worth discussion and we need to find one term to define this competency. There are many similar descriptions for practical work, such as practical wisdom, practical ability, practical intelligence, teaching tact, practice-based knowledge, knowledge for action, action wisdom, etc. Practice-based Teaching Competency(PTC) 2018-11-22

1. What is PTC ? Practice-based Teaching Competency(PTC) PTC refers to teachers’ competency to carry out the effective teaching based on their knowledge, skills, attitudes and belief. This is the main point in our study and the core of teacher professional development. 2018-11-22

2. Why focus on PTC in teacher professional development ? 1、teachers’ knowledge is the lion’s share of previous studies, like seven categories of teaching knowledge by L.S.Shulman, PCK and MKT. But the problem is that professional knowledge is not the guarantee for a good teacher, he needs to transform all his knowledge, skills, belief and attitudes into teaching practice, that is what we called Practice-based Teaching Competency. 2018-11-22

2. Why focus on PTC in teacher professional development ? 2、most teacher training adopts the form of expert lectures, in which teachers are trained as students, crammed with too many theoretical ideas. But it’s pity that these theories are not always applied to teaching practice. Sometimes there is a gap between theory and practice. Therefore, it is important to apply theory into practice and form theory from teaching practice. 2018-11-22

2. Why focus on PTC in teacher professional development ? 3、As we know that the most effective approach for teachers’ professional development is practice + reflection, but few teachers are able and willing to reflect deeply based on their own practice. So teachers need helps or tools to reflect effectively. That’s why we want to construct PTC model. 2018-11-22

3. How to construct the model of PTC ? The model of PTC is constructed through two ways: Theoretically, “ top down ” Practically, “ bottom up ” 2018-11-22

“ top down ” Seeking theoretical interpretation and research approaches from various developed career areas Skill-based action Rule-based action Knowledge-based action Reflective-based action 01 The epistemological basis from the practical fields 02 research paradigm for professional development Knowledge-for-practice Knowledge-in-practice Knowledge-of-practice • Evidence-based practice • Case study • Design-based research • Analysis of discourse interaction based on practical places • Phenomenological analysis • four levels of action • Different types of practical knowledge • Implicit knowledge • Communities of Practice • Case-based Reasoning • Intuitive Expertise 2018-11-22

“ bottom up ” Grounded Theory: Conceptualization of Practical Experience teaching research activities based on lessons 1 In-depth observation 2018-11-22

Teaching Research Activities There are many kinds of teaching research activities in China, such as: Opening lessons Teaching experience sharing seminars Project research Collective lesson planning Experts’ guidance & lectures 2018-11-22

4. How to develop teachers’ PTC based on the Platform of Video Case Study(PVCS)? PVCS is: A platform for teachers which focus on PTC. A kind of case study using hypermedia to show and link different components of video case study. A kind of action research aiming at the improvements of teaching behaviors. 2018-11-22

Advantages of PVCS for teachers’ PTC Provide authentic real teaching and learning situations; Provide questions by case study for teachers to discuss and think about; Provide different opinions by experts, colleagues and students; Embed Knowledge into multi-contexts; Connect theory to practice; Provide opportunities to learn from expert teachers Link teaching tasks to rich research resources 2018-11-22

The Function of PVCS PVCS • Evidence-based practice • Problem discussion • Theoretical links • Multiple evaluations • the process and characteristics of Design Research Design Research Practical reflection Teachers’ Training Research Activity • Project research • Teachers’ workshop • Teaching research group activities • Self-study • Macro: theoretical learning • Meso: strategic analysis • Micro: focus on the case 2018-11-22
