SHOOTING, TRY, TAP Rule 4.40 DEFINITIONS TRY for GOAL: “An attempt by a player to score two or three points by throwing the ball into his own basket” TAP FOR GOAL: “The contacting of the ball with any part of a player’s hand(s) in an attempt to direct the ball into his won basket” ACT OF SHOOTING: “Term used to describe the details that a player is trying for goal.”

SHOOTING, TRY, TAP Rule 4.40 THE BEGINNING OF THE TRY OR TAP The TRY begins with the MOTION, which habitually precedes the release of the ball The TAP begins when the player’s hand (s) TOUCHES the ball The “ACT of SHOOTING” begins simultaneously with the TRY or TAP for GOAL

The TRY & TAP both end in exactly the same manner: SHOOTING, TRY, TAP Rule 4.40 END OF THE TRY OR TAP The TRY & TAP both end in exactly the same manner: When the throw or tap is successful When it is certain the throw or tap is unsuccessful When the thrown or tapped ball touches the floor When the ball becomes dead

The “ACT of SHOOTING” Ends SHOOTING, TRY, TAP Rule 4.40 The “ACT of SHOOTING” Ends When the ball is clearly in flight – if the SHOOTER shot the ball while standing on the floor When the AIRBORNE SHOOTER – returns to the floor (one foot)

SHOOTING, TRY, TAP Rule 4.40 NOTE A player is TRYING for GOAL when the player has the ball and is THROWING or ATTEMPTING to THROW for GOAL. Since a foul by the defense could prevent the SHOOTER from Releasing the Ball – A Player could be Fouled in the “ACT of SHOOTING” with the ball in his hands.
