Basics for Bunker Installation Schedule Bunker CDR 2.0 Sofie Ossowski NSS Project Coordinator www.europeanspallationsource.se October 2018

Bunker schedule integration The Bunker is highly integrated with other ESS sub-project CF/SEC -> D01, D02, D03 buildings TD -> monolith area (Inserts, Light Shutters etc)… ICS -> PSS system & timing systems ESS schedule re-baselined in April/May 2018 This presentation will focus on: Access dates from CF/SEC Joint schedule of NSS & TD in the monolith/Bunker area Bunker construction accordingly

ESS rebaseline April/May 2018 Delays from SEC/CF in various areas & in NSS key Milestones Delays compared to 2016 Baseline Access to NSS buildings from 12-17 months Beam on Target (BOT) = 21 months Beam on 1st Instrument = 17 months 8 Instruments in User Program = 16 months NSS project completion < 12 months

Bunker construction Schedule following the ESS Rebaseline milestone New date Complete requirements March 2018 ✓ Complete Value Engineering August 2018 ✓ Release manufacturing tender* July 2018 ✓ Complete mechanical design September 2018 ✓ Critical Design Review October 2018 Award manufacturing contract December 2018 Ready to start assembly of Bunker (R6) October 2019 First Bunker installation (R6) February 2020 Start Bunker construction in D03 November 2020 Start Bunker construction in D01 February 2021 Bunker ready for BOT July 2022 *Tendering before CDR to maintain schedule After Rebaselining: Bunker design & manufacturing has 88 days float for R-BOT; Bunker installation is on critical path for R-BOT

Work area Access dates - Construction Jun 2019 > 3 Nov 2020 Bunker construction D02 Feb 2019 > 28 Feb 2020 Start of joint work (R6, NBOA & LS etc.) D02 / D01 D02 / D03 Starting point February 2020 Dictated by completion of the monolith Access to building Instrument halls are incomplete however the area under the high-bay close to monolith D01 Aug 2019 > 25 Feb 2021 Bunker construction Grey = baseline dates from 2016 Black = fixed dates 12th April 2018

Work area Access dates - Instrument builds D02 / D03 D03 bunker Dec 2019 > 9 July 2021 D01 bunker Dec 2019 > 25 Aug 2021 D02 / D01 Starting point February 2020 Dictated by completion of the monolith Access to building Instrument halls are incomplete however the area under the high-bay close to monolith Grey = baseline dates from 2016 Black = fixed dates 12th April 2018

Critical Path to Beam on Target (BOT) Milestone Goes Through Target Building, Monolith, and Bunker Construction 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 Monolith Area Superstructure Monolith and A2T Concrete BOT High Bay Infrastructure Installation Target Building (D02) Access for Monolith Installation Testing and Readiness Review Monolith Installation & Testing Ready for parallel bunker and monolith works Target Wheel & MR Installed Target RBOT CF D01/D03 Build-out to weather tight 3 months float Parallel Works Target Integrated Bunker Scope Final testing and Readiness Review Bunker Construction and Installation Monolith inserts & shutters installed NSS RBOT

Critical-Path for NSS (high level) Bunker R-BOT & SOUP Access from CF& TD Access from CF Q1 2018 Q1 2020 Q2 2022 Bunker design, proc & manufacturing Bunker/monolith (NSS & TD) TD needs to complete insert/plug installations (tot 42) before bunker can finalize Bunker build & first instruments in bunker Bunker R-BOT 7 July 2022 Instruments for SOUP Instrument design, proc & manufacturing SOUP Instrument design, proc & manufacturing First 4 instruments delivery of cave and contents is close to critical path (Q4 2019)

Key Schedule dependencies & assumptions – Bunker & TD/CF interface CF & Target dependencies from agreed dates with CF/SEC (on 12th April) Majority of work in instrument hall (Bunker and instruments) will be done before Full Access, with reduced (80%) efficiency, but without increase in timeline b/c this is on critical path for SOUP (planning extra funds for mitigation) High degree of parallel work with Skanska & TD – shifts will most likely be needed between projects, and high degree of safety coordination will be required. NSS to work through summer holidays for anything on the critical path (i.e. bunker installation + installation and commissioning of early instruments) otherwise assume normal working hours and standard ESS calendar Wait for weather tight buildings and floor treatments Don't wait for T&C of MEP, but start a bit before (schedule mitigation) Several TD deliverables are on NSS critical path for R-BOT (no float) insertion tool, plugs, LSS etc

Monolith and Inserts All 42 ports needs to be plugged before BOT 16 complete ports with guides (15 instr + TBL) 26 complete ports with blind plugs Neutron direction

Installation overview CF, TD & NSS Overview illustrating the ongoing work from the SEC, TD and NSS in the main areas D02, D03, D01 and E01/E02. Red arrows indicates key dependencies/predecessors. Working through summer for ESS critical path.

Integrated Schedule Bunker construction Bunker team working closely with TD, NSS instruments and CF/SEC. Building up bunker following access dates, in order to mitigate delays and to make the best of access dates => build it ”from outside and in” Working in parallel with “TD& NSS joint monolith schedule” NSS developing alternative bunker schedule (from inside and out)... Plan B 6 months ‘open-bunker‘ for in-bunker instrument installation – more intense on D03 (west), likely to need multiple teams

NSS R-BOT July 7th 2022 (Bunker, TBL, 1st instrument) Round up TD R-BOT March 9th 2022 NSS R-BOT July 7th 2022 (Bunker, TBL, 1st instrument) Installation sequence is complex but understood Schedule is driven by access dates and equipment deliveries No float from CF & TD to NSS “start of installation” Multiple external and internal dependencies

Thank you

Schedule risks Schedule delay zero float, working summers for critical path Not fully detailed/resourced Critical dependencies access dates from CF (with no float) area handovers from TD (with no float) depends on CF access dates and TD procurement/IK deliveries components delivery (inserts / bunker) - No agreed delivery dates with manufacturers yet High degree of parallel work with Skanska & TD NSS or TD does not own the building, SEC does. Majority of work before full access Neighbouring SEC construction work safety, shifts, coordination of transport of equipment, temporary solutions etc etc Cleanliness during installation (parallel access) Licensing process Assumed that we can install Bunker R6 structure without the installation permit (non-radioactive components)

Mitigations – already implemented Earlier access of bunker crane = install weather proof crane Aligned the bunker installation sequence to follow access to areas Improved schedule dependencies for installation, revisited what CF and TD work that must be done before NSS can start (now more aggressive schedule) Joint TD/NSS installation will be done with parallel teams (D01 and D03 sides) Agreed on alignment area in E01 for NSS & TD work with NBOA, IET, plugs Simplified installation tool (TD insert installation)

Inserts Simplified tool and transportation route

Development since June Several meetings discussing transport scenarios and solutions Details such as roads, door widths, height differences, passage way dimensions have been looked into and compared. TD has proceeded with simplified design of NBEX tool that can be used before activated area => IIT (insert installation tool) Higher likelyhood to have it manufactured in time for installation Cheaper (since we potentially need 4) Weigh less (crucial since we need to transport from E01 to monolith area) NSS held PDR for NBOA and moved into “tend & man.” phase for first instruments Delays in SEC schedule for D-buildings with several months (6-17 months….) Different alternatives have been discussed thouroghly last months…! Optimised installation sequence for NSS/TD/SEC activities 4/29/2019

Transport solution Integration Workshop in E01 (Heimdal footprint) – E01 crane & temp. cranes Pre-alignment (clean, checks etc) NBOA aligned Alignment lids sealed NBPI windows mounted Transport to south corner E01 (NMX footprint) – E01 crane IIT with steel lid/protection cover Transportation cradle with air-pads/cushion as needed (to be defined in “early tests”) Transport from E01 to D03 south entrance – truck/boom truck on existing road D03 south entrance to about “20m radius” – truck/boom truck with ramp “20m radius” to IIT mounting knobs (monolith face) – Bunker cranes//boom truck D01 inserts/plugs: From E01 to D01 south entrance - truck/boom truck on existing road or b. From D03 south entrance to D01 via passage way - truck/boom truck Weather proofed buildings & bunker cranes !! Subject for SEC detailed work Can be decided later
