THE HUMAN IMPACT ON ECOSYSTEMS Pollution and Overpopulation can seriously damage the health of an ecosystem (the living and non-living factors in an area).
Human Impact on Ecosystems
Overpopulation ~7 billion people Many natural resources are nonrenewable More people means: –1) More forests removed –2) More resources consumed –3)
Aim: How is the earth's atmosphere similar to a greenhouse?

Biomes and Conservation
 The main cause of climate change is the greenhouse effect.  This is the warming of the surface or lower atmosphere of a planet.  This is caused.
Pollution. Smog smog – mixture of chemicals that forms a haze in the air (Nitrogen Oxides etc) smoke from cars and factories release the chemicals.

“People start pollution. People can stop it.” PSA 1971 Before you watch this commercial we want you to know that this commercial one two awards and “by the end of the campaign, Keep America Beautiful local teams had helped to reduce litter by as much as 88% in 300 communities, 38 states, and several countries. The success of the Keep America Beautiful anti-litter campaign led to hundreds of other environmental messages through the years, from many different sources, including the Ad Council.”

Human Impact Native American Crying Commercial

Climate Change Greenhouse gases keep our planet warm Problem: Humans emit C02 in our atmosphere that traps more heat Who caused it: Humans burning fossil fuels Effect: Our planet is increasing in temperature. Organisms will die because they can not adapt fast enough It’s called climate change versus global warming because weather patterns are changing

Climate Change a way forward 6 Degrees hotter

Ozone Layer The ozone layer is shields (protects) Earth from harmful UV rays Problem: There’s a hole in the ozone layer Who caused it: Humans used CFCs (a chemical) that caused the hole Solution- Don’t use CFCs Hole is decreasing in size since we’ve stopped using CFCs.

Ozone Layer Video

Acid Rain Problem: Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) are emitted into the atmosphere and make sulfuric and nitric acid from the burning of fossil fuels Who caused it: Humans by burning fossil fuels Solution- Limiting burning of fossil fuels and scrubber technology Effects: Acid rain causes soil to leach aluminum into lakes, rivers, and ponds. The aluminum changes the pH of the water and all the organisms die. Trees and plants are also effected by the leaching of aluminum

Tell them about lake a-wahhh-sting acid rain video

FRACKING What they do: Inject chemical into shale rock and extract natural gas Problem- contaminates ground water with carcinogenic chemicals Fracking Video

Oil Spills BP Oil Spill BP Oil Spill Timeline

Solutions Using clean energy (wind, solar, and hydro energy) Solar means use sunlight for energy Hydro means use water for energy Wind means use wind power for energy

Renewable VS Nonrenewable Wind, solar, and hydro power are renewable. We can keep making it Fossil Fuels ( oil, coal, and gas) There’s only so much It can’t be replaced once you’ve used it
