The census An official counting of the population. Every 10 years. Last one was 2010. Used to find out how many people live in each state. Determines representation for the House of Representatives. Shows population growth Collects demographic information. (Characteristics of human populations)

Population Growth Countries grow in 3 ways: Natural increase Birth rate > Death rate (Live births/deaths per 1,000) Adding territory Immigration

Population Changes Households: Increase in divorces, having fewer children, choosing to not marry, living longer/by themselves longer. Women’s roles: More careers are open to women. Majority work outside the home. More women than men enter and graduate college. Older population: People are living longer because of healthier lifestyles and better medical care. Diverse population: People from various ethnic groups identify as having mixed heritage.

Population on the move Migration: Movement of people from region to region. Into cities The invention of the automobile led to the development of suburbs. Not having to live where they worked. Moving to warmer climates In the 2000 census, Las Vegas was one of the fastest growing cities in the US.

Closing Question, 8/28 Taking what you now know about citizenship, being a good citizen, what/who American citizens are, and population, why would this be important with the issue of civil rights and liberties? How could our rights/liberties be changed over time due to these factors?
