Presentation transcript:

Welcome to class! Today we are… When you leave you should be able to… Working together to create multimedia research presentations in order to inform our classmates about current social issues that we will discuss throughout the sixth six weeks.  When you leave you should be able to… Have a basic understanding of some prominent social issues, so that you are able to participate confidently as we progress through this unit. Synthesize researched information into a multimedia presentation.

Final six weeks  We will be focusing on using research to persuade! Our focus will be on relevant social issues Environmentalism, healthcare, drug legalization, stem cell research, educational reform, etc. Our research will culminate in: Debates! A persuasive essay on your debate/research topic

STEP 1: choose a social issue Together, go to this website: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/social-issues-in-todays-society.html As a group, review the list of social issues. CHOOSE ONE that your group is the most interested in. Make sure that there are two sides to your issue.  (for and against) Our work today will be informative, not persuasive—you won’t have to pick a side—so don’t worry if everyone in the group doesn’t have the same opinion on your social issue. Tell me which topic you choose, so that I can make sure no other group is working on it!

STEP 2: Assign roles MEMBER 1 MEMBER 2 MEMBER 3 This group member will be responsible for: A slide that defines the issue, explaining both sides. A slide that explains an important court case related to your issue. (ex. ____ vs. ____ ) A slide with a link to a song (YouTube is fine) that has lyrics that are related to your social issue. The full lyrics should be on the slide, with important lines highlighted. MEMBER 2 A slide that has a picture and information about an important person who is “against” the issue A slide that explains an important protest or event related to your issue. A slide with a link to a school appropriate YouTube video (three minutes or less) that provides information about your issue. A brief summary of the video should be on the slide. MEMBER 3 A slide that has a picture and information about an important person who is “for” the issue A slide that explains the story of someone who has been personally affected by your issue. A slide with a link to a movie trailer for a film or documentary that discusses your issue. A brief summary of the film or documentary should be on the slide. (you can get this from IMDB, but put it in your own words)

STEP 3: Assemble presentation ALL GROUP MEMBERS Complete their slides in their own words, WITHOUT copying and pasting from the internet. (except for the song lyrics!) Help to create a FIRST SLIDE with a title for your presentation. Help to create a LAST SLIDE, with a list of the links used to find your information and videos Help to put the PowerPoint together, and decide which order the slides should go in! Your PowerPoint should be 11 slides. 3 slides each with a title slide and a slide full of links
